Where every note is in exactly the right place.
Where every harmony is dead-on.
Where you are singing along by the end of the first chorus (or sooner) the first time you hear it.

•"Baby Blue" - Badfinger
•"Starry Eyes" - The Records
•"I'll Feel a Whole Lot Better" - The Byrds
•"As We Go Up, We Go Down" - Guided By Voices

Are the first ones that come to mind for me.
And I think that when this thread is all said and done, we should compile the choices and make them into one maddenly infectuous mix. The Perfect Pop mix.

All in favor, post your choices here.

Not a musician, so I can't guarantee they fit the criterion, but here's two from under your radar:

Hang Fire -- The Rolling Stones
Candyfloss -- Wilco

The only criteria is that they are perfect to you. And that they are pop songs.

Taking the easy way out, huh Tanner?

It's funny that everybody seems to forget mentioning The Beatles in these type of threads, because it's just a given.

Definately would be on my top ten, with Badfinger battling for #1.

Fuck yeah on both counts.

My only original additions might be...

I Resign As Clown - XTC
Joining A Fanclub - Jellyfish

Both are a little more complicated than a pop song has to be, but both come off so well.

And, "Inches and Falling" by The Format..holy shit, I can (and have) listen to that on repeat for an hour at a time.

Yup.

I only have it from Albion's XTC Mix, where one of us mislabeled it. I will not divulge its embarassingly high playcount in iTunes. IT DOESN'T GET OLD.

I Want You Back is easily one of the greatest pop songs for me ever.

Derris busted this out on the guitar at GAR's wedding. I'd forgotten about it.

This however, is the one of the worst pieces of dogshit ever committed to wax.

How's about New Pr0ns -- "Letter from an Occupant" ?

And if we're talking Beatles, my vote goes to "Golden Slumbers"

also, Stevie Wonder "I Was Made to Love Her"

And BRUUUUUUUUCEEE "Sherry Darling"

never gets old for me. Or for my family. We all sing along when it comes on the car radio. LOUDLY.

I like that Format song, but I would put other songs on that album above that one--namely the 1-2-3 combo of "Pick Me Up," "Dog Problems," and "Oceans." Although maybe "Dog Problems" doesn't keep up the pace enough to qualify.

I'll throw out a few others in the newer, non-obvious, or Radcliffe-will-disagree vein:

Self - Dead Man
Doleful Lions - Ocean Stars
Rogue Wave - Publish My Love
Shins - Turn on Me

Also: Big Star - Ballad of El Goodo
