I'd take the box, for many of the reasons sketched out earlier.

I really think it's impossible to answer this question without at least generally knowing the relative value of each. It's probably a mistake to follow the "take the trip, or you might spend all the money and not take a trip" logic, particularly because you seem like a pretty responsible person capable of making a plan and sticking to it. So if you can get more trip out of the box-money, then you should definitely take the box.

Unless you think your employer will in fact be disappointed that you didn't go for the trip (arguably the more thoughtful, directed, personal offer), or would take that as graceless, in which case you have some intangible political capital to weigh against the cash value.

It's quite interesting that you state that, Aaron, because Faith made it quite clear that she wanted to give me something "special...personal". And knowing her, this would be the most meaningful. "Tania, I could get you a timeshare in Jamaica if that's what you'd like."

As a btw, I was already planning on taking time off upon my boss' returning. I just need to sit down and plan what it is I want to do and where I want to go.

After sleeping on it, I think I'm going to choose the vacation offer. I seriously need a break and if it's paid for, I'd be dumb to pass on the opportunity. I wonder if Faith would allow me to plan my own vacation with whatever budget she provides me.

Yeah--I put it in terms of "political capital" because I'm a law student and an asshole, but really there's always an important personal element to these things, and I for one would probably never go for the cash option unless I honestly thought it wouldn't disappoint the person giving me the choice. So from my perspective, you're making the right choice.

BOX!!! Vacations are great, especially when the airfare is picked up by your boss, but you'll still end up dropping plenty of cash on your trip. Take the money and use part of it for home improvement and part for a mini-vacation. Best of both worlds.

Thread does not deliver... I was expecting a discussion of female pubic coiffure.

(Go figure, huh? Monty, assuming the perverse?)

I applaud the absence of "dick... in a box" jokes, though.

The big question is: would the box be able to pay for the curtain and leave you some change?

I tend to think it would. It's pretty easy to find cheap vacations.

Take the vacay in a heartbeat. They were thoughtful enough to (not so subtlely) bring up the topic so they could know a nice way to reward you for the hard work you're doing. That's rare.

And I don't get the sense you're hurting for money, while you're clearly hurting for time off, peace of mind and a general change of scenery.

This is a no-brainer for me. Get your bad self booked on a plane, T.

And send us pics. :D

I have a theory of how this came about... the boss was reading a motivational book. Most of them now say to motivate the younger generation, give them time off; to motivate the older generation, give them a raise.

Tania, you're in the middle, so she's offering you either or. If you choose the box, then you're putting yourself in the "OLDER" category. Do you want to be OLD?!?!

Choose the vacation. It will be more fulfilling in the long run. The money will probably be a short-term bonus, correct?

Update: Told the boss tonight that I've chosen the curtain. She was quite pleased and will get back to me on the budget and planning phases.

This is much too exciting!

Good move. I agreed with Haq's sentiments stated above, especially since your boss is a woman. Hope they set you up nice as you sure deserve it!

Is your boss straight? Because if not, she probably wanted you to choose her box.
