Swervedriver and the Notwist are great albums. Mazzy Star, Flying Saucer Attack, and the very simple the Organ album are also pretty good.

Most of the rest "Lost Classics?"

thinking fellers union is this generations VU, where no one ever bought one of their albums but the three dudes that did started zines about them.

I own about half of that list, but what jumped out at me is Swell. I have no idea what is up with them at this point, but they have an extensive catalog that is amazing. Fuck even flow.

Spain? I own 3 of their cds. A poor man's Red House Painters piggybacking on the famous jazz dad.

Silkworm, Lucksmiths, Number One Cup, and of course Beulah (really unknown?)... I agree with.

some of my favorites, though I own a bunch more on the list. I think this list is interesting as a primer to people born post 1990, but overall these albums, at least to me, seem to be still on a great deal of shelves of friends. I talked about Spain with a friend the other day come to think about it, and spun Come-Near Life Experience, just a few weeks ago as well.

How is Chavez a lost gem when they just reissued it as part of a Chavez package?

That Jack Drag album is awesome. Now I have to go pull it out and listen to it again.

Hearing that Cornelius album I got recently in SF for the first time...it's really weird. Don't know if I'd call it a lost classic though.

I just got the "Hope and Adams" Wheat cd through lala and I thought it was not that good as compared to their per second, per second, per second album, which I love. It's got a great Thin Lizzy feel/vibe to it.

Mazzy Star? Lost?

Hmmm.

Yeah, that was every sensitive indiegirl's favorite album to swoon over back in the day.

1995 maybe? I forget when that came out orginally.

These are the ones that I own; and I have albums by several more of the bands listed, too (just not that album).

I don't have have a problem calling any of these "classics", as that is what you make of it. But calling them "LOST"? Many of these you can find in just about any used bin, and lots of them are still even IN PRINT... some even on a major label!

Yeah, I think "lost" was a poor choice of words. That is definately a very strong list of albums, though.

These are the only one's I've heard. Mazzy Star and Swervedriver are in my top 50 of all time.

The Glands... what a great Athens, GA band that never got the attention they deserved. I wonder if Ross is still managing School Kids Records?

So magnet's not relevant anymore? Its probably not relevant to me anymore but I thought that was because my taste had changed and not that its not still a decent mag for indie music even if its samplers are awful. If Magnet isn't a decent indie rag, what is?

That list is mediocre though. I'd consider maybe 5-10 of those worth owning. One of which is Spain. I'll disagree that they are a poor man's red house painters. I like them a whole hell of a lot more than the Red House Painters.

For indie kids, as a magazine, It's relevant on a level slightly higher than Spin and RS.

but is the medium itself relevant anyone? at my other board we debated if music reviews still held any importance... since you can just click a link and hear a song for yourself, why read about what some other schmoe thinks of it?

Really? I thought that album was really boring and lost all the lo-fi charm of their first 2 albums. Apparently, the band doesn't like it all that much either.

Yeah, I was an early fan of Wheat and did not take well to the turn they took after H&A. Actually, most of H&A doesn't do it for me either, though I dig the production work (shocker).

Although, some of the initial versions of the Per Second songs (not what ended up on the album) are on my "do not delete" list. Much rawer, less antiseptic.

I haven't read a copy of Magnet in years, but I hear the guy who runs it is topnotch good people. Still though, this list is kinda :?:

Well, there was a naive moment when rock critics actually reviewed albums. In other words, they applied practical criticism to the subject at hand and attempted to measure it against accepted yardsticks of quality and set it in its proper spot in the pantheon. Of course, we're now in the era of "it sucks" or "it rules" and all that's gone out the window - and even the verbose review sites (like Pitchfork) are made up of know-nothing 20-somethings with such an inaccurate revisionist view of rock history that their opinions mean absolutely bupkis.

So, no.
