Got it today from Netflix, and hunkered down this evening to watch it with my soy brats and soy ice cream. Great non-linear storytelling about who and what Daniel Smith is. I found that they didn't spend a whole lot of time on his "awakening" but rather let the whole aspect of "what is Christian music" take the forefront for the religion section.

While I readily appreciated his music, I think after watching the film, I certainly have a better understanding and more joy of it. Its actually quite refreshing to see his siblings and parents digging each other.

I felt also that it certainly wasn't biased towards him. I think there were moments (both in fan reactions), and his own mannerisms that we get a sense of being quite pretentious. The scenes dealing with his "salesman" rap was hard to watch simply because here he is peddling his merch as art, but onstage. I probably would go to the bathroom during those moments.

Surprising, Sufjan has quite a chunk in this. At one point I wondered if the whole montage of "Illinoise" stage stuff wasn't a visual jab that perhaps Sufjan stole ideas from Daniel Smith's Danielson Famile.

If you enjoy docs on quirky people (like Jad Fair and the such), I think you'd probably like this. If you dig his music, certainly check it out. Well worth the 2 hr investment.
