For me, there has really been not a single release that has blown me away yet. I have never spent so little on new music in my life and for the most part the only music that sounds good to me right now was made between 1967 and 1977. And no, I'm not getting old..well I am, but thats not it. Its just that everything I've looked forward to so far this year has fallen short of my expectations or been good but not up to the level of an artists previous work (Son Volt, EL-P). Anyone else feel this way ? or No. Cases in point:

Lucinda Williams
Kings Of Leon
Fountains Of Wayne

I could go on. I do actually think the Arcade Fire exceeded my expectations, but I was never on the "Funeral"train anyway.

Not really counting Live at Massey as something 2007, I haven't been blown away by anything yet either. I really haven't given many listens to anything new from 2007 yet though.

I'd chalk it up to being still very early in the year. I tend to find most of my favorites in Sept-Dec whether its by something growing on me with repeat listens or just getting more motivated to look for 2007 stuff. I think the Son Volt was the only album that I needed to own the day it came out. I don't see anything coming out in the next few months that I'll be running to the stores for either.

I also think last year was an amazing year...best in probably 15 years so it would be hard for this year to measure up by comparison.

As far as rock stuff...I like the new Wilco (comes out in May) and I'm sure I'll be into the new BRMC.

Have you bought Neil Young - Live @ Massey Hall? It came out this year, but was recorded in 1971.

Other stuff I'm digging:

!!!
Jesu
Klaxons
Panda Bear
Deerhunter
Besnard Lakes

I haven't heard anything this year that has wow'd me from start to finish, but that's been pretty true for the past few years (one of many ongoing reasons I've abandondedededed YE lists).

So far, I've really liked about half of the National and Menomena records, but there's also a lot on these that I don't dig. So far, I like - but don't love - the new Wilco, but maybe I'll come around once the weather's warmed up.

So, I guess you're not alone..? Of course, with Jesus in your heart, you're never alone.

edit: oh yeah, duh, Panda Bear. Probably my favorite.

I like it and all, but BRMC might as well take the plunge and change it to JAMC.

Any year that includes a Blonde Redhead album is a great year for me. But overall, I think it's been a great year: The Arcade Fire, Panda Bear, Midnight Movies, The Besnard Lakes, among others.

people have been saying that the current years music sucks for a few years now, yet we always find stuff worth listening to. just wait, and good music will come.

I personally thought Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer? was an excellent album, very consistent. the Handsome Furs record is what I've been listening to lately, and I really like it but I'm not sure if it's going to be topping my best of 2k7 list.
I always feel bad assuming an album is going to be good before I hear it, but I'm expecting the new queens of the stone age record to blow me away as well.

The only album I've liked from start to finish this year has been Klaxons.

There's a few duds on most of the other albums that would be in my top 10. (Feist, LCD Soundsystem, Amy Winehouse)

some serious lol's in this thread.

year has been too good in some cases. but whereas last year had a plethora of outstanding indie/pop releases kinda thing, this year has been a lot better on the electronic/dance tip. there's always plenty of stuff out there.

It's been a friggin' great year for new music, especially if you step outside of the completely boring "indie music" genre - seriously, this genre is nearly dead to me lately, what a bunch of shit that's been coming out, no wonder you all say it's been an awful year.

Great stuff:

Blackfield (year's best, so far)
Bill Callahan
Exploding Star Orchestra
Anat Fort
The Gang Font featuring Interloper
Jesu
Marillion
Billy Martin & John Medeski
Pat Metheny & Brad Mehldau
Paul Motian/Bill Frisell/Joe Lovano
Grant-Lee Phillips
Robert Pollard
Porcupine Tree
Rush (Tuesday - no brainer for me)
The Sea And Cake (upcoming, but I've already heard it and like it a lot)
Son Volt
David Torn
Kenny Werner

And I'm highly anticipating the new Pelican and Wilco albums (I skipped listening too closely to the preview). We're not even half-way through. This has been a stellar year - just not for so-called "indie" crap so much.

I found at least 10-15 great albums this year so far.

I think the key is to expand your taste in music into as many genres as possible. If you're only looking for a specific kind of rock or a specific kind of electronic music, etc., I can see why you'd be frustrated.

There's also the issue of how much time you can actually dedicate to find new music.

Yeah, he's always working on something, it seems. This things better than the first one. Seriously - it's brilliant.

I like it, don't love it - yet. That's pretty much the usual pattern with them for me. It takes a while for every album to show its true self. At the moment, this one's real dark and gloomy, kind of like the old proggy stuff mixed with the new metal PT sounds. Basically, it sounds like Wilson has decided that Blackfield is now his outlet for the "lighter," catchier material (think "Open Car" and "Lazarus" from Deadwing) and PT is where he takes his weirdness. But, as everyone is pointing out, the album is worth it for the 17-minute "Anesthetize" alone - it pretty much covers all of the territory the band has ever covered in one song. Pretty amazing piece of work, and there's about 20 seconds of the heaviest, fastest stuff SW has ever done that everyone is creaming themselves over. Definitely a good album, but I've yet to completely wrap my head around it yet. I still want to hear Blackfield II more.

Really, I gotta say that anyone who can't find great music this year simply a.) needs to branch out and/or b.) look harder. There is SO much interesting stuff available that, uh, seriously there's no reason for Modest Mouse or whatever to be on anyone's list now... or ever.

if you havent listened to enough good stuff its your own fault

i havent kept up with stuff at all this year, ive been too busy working/studying/drinking to keep up with anything, plus ive been listening to a lot more hip hop and house this year than anything else, which are more single based than album based

but i realize theres plenty of good albums and not hearing them is my own fault - im just gonna catch up in a few years

Well, I certainly haven't bought as many new releases as I did last year by this time. There's been a few, and certainly a few that I'm looking forward to.
