The Complete Verve Johnny Hodges Small Group Sessions 1956-1961

Ellington's most prominent soloist played an alto sax and in later days recorded as a leader in his own right. This 5 disc collection gives you the prime recordings of his sessions as leader recorded during his second long stint with the Ellington band. The ballads and blues stuff on here comes across the best, but really with music and players this good, nothing sounds less than fantastic. If you'd like to check out Hodges from this period without springing for a 5 disc set, I'd suggest getting either Side by Side or Back to Back, collaborations with Ellington where Hodges takes on a strong role. Or, if you dig vinyl, you can look for the 2 LP set called Blues Summitt that collects both albums.

I like Nobody's effort to give a discription for his lesser known np:'s so i'll do the same or at least copy/paste one:

New York’s melting pot of Puerto Rican, Cuban and Afro-American musicians led to stunning culture clashes in the 1960s and 70s when Latin styles mixed with Funk, Disco, Soul and Jazz to produce new hybrids such as Boogaloo, Latin Jazz, Disco and Salsa. All these are featured in Soul Jazz Records latest journey into Latin music, New York Latin Hustle.
The record features all the kings of Latin music – Tito Puente, Machito, Eddie Palmieri, Candido, Ray Barretto and many more, alongside rarer, lesser known names.

In the 1960s Fania Records and Tico Records released stunning Latin Boogaloo, Descargas, Latin Soul from the emerging New York Latin scene. In the 1970s, Salsoul Records similarly mixed Salsa, Soul and Funk to release stunning Latin Disco crossover material such as Candido’s ‘Dancin and Prancin’, which would go on to be a million seller.
New York Latin Hustle brings all this together and features Latin music from all these styles, labels and eras.

Soft Machine-Fourth
Soft Machine-Fifth

I've only recently gotten into these guys. Their catalog was fairly daunting. Luckily, we have a record shop around here that focuses on prog/kraut/psych and the owner was quite helpful in getting me aquainted. I picked these two up on a recent trip to Bmore. Much different than the third album. Fourth is in many ways a free jazz album with rock tendancies. Warbling horns, and jittery guitars make it a hard album to focus on. Its not that I don't enjoy the sounds, but in many places it seems pushed and unfocused. Fifth is goes even further.

Haven't heard anyone speak of this band on the board. Anyone else a listen to them, or have Wyatt/Hopper solo stuff?
