I don't go to chat often, so i guess i tend to agree that the board seems terminal.

And if chatzy was shut down tomorrow and the typical conversation moved back to the board, everyone would probably bemoan how the mostly NMR and mean-spirited content was now killing Ob.

I don't go into chat very often, but when I do there's rarely more than four other people in there. That doesn't seem like the critical mass necessary to move all interesting conversation off the board.

The funny thing is, there are always 3-7 people browsing the board, but no one posts. Which pretty much plays into my theory that not many people here are capable of creating their own entertainment content, but are very good at bitching about what is out there.

As in: start your own thread/controversy/whatever...Dana's random thread has 5 pages to it, so there are obviously things to talk about.

It's easy to point out that chatzy ruined obner, but those pointing this out fail to notice that the people who chat regularly are also posting regularly. I don't think there's one chatzy regular who has neglected obner. In fact, it seems the non-chatzy crowd and those who complain about it have disappeared and don't post as much (ie. BeeOK, SK, etc.).

Fair point that I haven't posted very much, but I would say that it's a pretty big generalization to say that all the chatzy crowd still posts regularly. Ayah, for example, seems not to post very much, and it seems as though there are others who have pared down because of chat and that seems to be the main attraction sometimes.

Also, for some people, this whole chat thing engender feelings that people sometimes use chat to gossip and slam other boarders behind their backs, which has become a deterrent for hanging out in the community at large. I'm not saying it happens all the time or that everyone does it, and I really don't have much of a problem with it anymore personally, but chat has definitely changed the vibe somewhat for some people and they don't come around anymore for that reason.

For the record, Laura hasn't been in chat much either. She's pretty busy these days.

As far as your second point, much of what is said in chat is not meant to be mean-spirited. It is what it is. And trust me, even people in chat such as myself and others are not immune to the verbal abuse by Radcliffe and others.

I think people also have to stop seeing chat as this exclusive invite-only club. It's open to any Obner member at any time.

I don't know where you get your perception but its not really accurate.

Most people have better things to chat about than gossip about other people. Anything that is said is hardly behind people's back anyway since it really is impossible to know who is logged on but not chatting at any given time and chat history is right there to read. Personally, i never say anything that i wouldn't say to someone's face.

And ayah doesn't post or chat much since she started a new job a few months ago.
