Yeah I watched that tonight too. I love those shows.

The Zappa one before that was crazy. It looked at the making of "Apostrophe" and "Over-Nite Sensation".

i wish i had known that was on. must have been interesting. "camarillo brillo" is one of those precious few songs i consider perfect.

I was just amazed at the number of instruments and ideas he crammed into each song. Dweezil was behind the knobs and was showing you what instruments and sounds were on 16 tracks for one song.

I could watch those shows all day long. The "Joshua Tree" one is good too. They're like a Behind the Music but the focus is on the band's sound and how they got to a place in the evolution of their sound to record that particular album.

This sounds like a really great series. I hadn't heard about it before.

I saw a good chunk of that, and was pretty mesmerized, other than the inane Billy Bob Thornton "expert commentary." Zappa was so much smarter than people generally think. Too many buy into the loopy caricature of him perpetuated by such things as the Dana Carvey impersonation of him appearing at the PMRC Hearings ("EXCUSE ME, SENATOR!"). People tended to not take him seriously based on his bizarre appearance and wacky-sounding music, without peeling away the many layers of what was underneath.

haha. Yeah I didn't quite get the connection there. I think that footage was taken during his tour for the Billy Bob Thornton band.

"His guitar, to me, sounded like razorblades, especially when playing an SG."

Me too--I'm also a dork for guitar amps and micing techniques and shit.

I almost started a thread after watching The Joshua Tree one a couple weeks ago about how they are literally a six person band with Eno and Lanois but its become nearly impossible to have a rational discussion about U2 anymore without people just posting that they don't like U2 or haven't liked them since October or a bunch of other horseshit that I could really give a fuck about.

I'm sorry I missed those two last night.

Let's start one about the greatness that is Rattle and Hum. I think there's at least 3 of us here who love that album.

And I would like to see these shows but we don't get them up here.

Don't hold me to this but I think they may be available on DVD.

Someone was supposed to send me a copy of this as an Obnerball payup not too long ago...

Sadly, "American Beauty" has so far gone unrecieved...

Yeah I watched them as well. The Zappa one was fucking awesome. I saw the Dead one in the afternoon actually in the gym. Pretty cool even though I'm not a huge fan.

I've been watching these pretty religiously since they started airing a few months ago.

Just good TV.
