Why?
Damn is this a great record. I know that FT has been talking it up for a long time, but I really love this. Another old-school artist that I have to dip into a bit more of their back-catalog.

Any suggestions on where to go next?
Bob? Billy G? (Are you even a fan? I never know anymore.)
Anyone?
Bueller?
Bueller?

Yeah, it's about time you got with the program on this, PT! Seriously, this is right up your alley! So is a lot of Beulah (as per your request), I need to get you some of their stuff ASAP.

The earlier stuff (pre-'74) is better , IMO. Son Of Schmilsson is awesome. And if you aren't averse to an album of old standards with a big band backing, A Little Touch Of Schmilsson In The Night is excellent, as well. I love his work before he plunged off the artistic cliff.

Side note: his mom was the cafeteria cashier at my college in 1969/70. He never called her.

What's the one, that when you opened the LP, it opened like bat wings? That was pretty cool. Wish I still had that.

i bought it a few years ago, probably on FT's recommendation. I thought it was pretty meh so it disappeared into the collection. Seeing Dumpjack spin him so much recent has made me want to give it a second chance but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

Yeah, I'm definitely a fan of almost all of the albums I've heard from him. Pussy Cats in particular is brilliant rock and roll.

"Down" and "Jump Into the Fire" are both among the finest songs ever recorded.

The bass breakdown two-thirds of the way through "Jump Into The Fire" is the most awesome thing. Especially if you picture Dr. Teeth & The Electric Mayhem playing it.

His first two albums are the best. Agree with everyone who said that post-Pussy Cats, his albums got worse and worse. He did write the music for Popeye, which I have a soft spot for (come on, "He Needs Me" is good). His backing, cooing vocals on the Lennon version of "Only You" are so......just nice sounding.

My sons inexplicably LOVE Altman's Popeye movie, and I can always crack them up hysterically by going around the house scream-singing "HE'S LARGE!!!" in full Shelly Duvall warble.

Okay, now I'm borrowing Son Of Schmilsson and this is the GOOFIEST damn record I've ever heard by somebody not named Zappa, Spike, or Vivian.

You gotta love an album where the first line to a song is:
You're breaking my heart
You're tearing it apart
So fuck you...

Might be a new favorite.

I like "I'd Rather Be Dead" (song goes "I'd rather be dead, than wet my bed") that's sung with a choir of old people. There's a video on youtube with a clip of them recording it. Part of that old documentary that for some reason has never been released.
