Chicago Sun Times Wrote:
Oh baby! Kids seek fame in South Loop photo shoot
CONTEST | Winner will be pictured on cereal bar wrapper

May 24, 2007
BY SANDRA GUY sguy@suntimes.com
Smiles, frowns, eating and gurgling punctuated a casting call Wednesday to choose a baby and a toddler as official spokeschildren for new lines of organic food.
The children had only five minutes to achieve a make-or-break moment in front of a photographer.

The Chicago competition at Dominick's grocery store in the South Loop was one of 22 contests nationwide that grocery-store operator Safeway is hosting. The contestants had survived a luck of the draw.

Dominick's and its owner, Safeway, had advertised the modeling competition on their Web sites a week ago, and 150 adults signed up.

Perhaps Chicago should take pride that our parents' dreams of grandeur paled in comparison with the 800 who wanted to take part in Texas, where baby beauty pageants are a matter of Southern pride.

An independent judging company, Alcone Marketing Group, chose 25 babies and 25 toddlers at random to come to a local grocery store for their photo shoots. On the big day, 21 babies ages 6 to 12 months and 17 toddlers ages 1 to 2 showed up at the Dominick's at 1340 S. Canal.

Safeway needs cute, adorable faces to represent its new "O" organic food for babies, and an accompanying "O" line of toddler products. The launches of such treats as cereal bar, infant formula and rice cereal follow the sales success of "O" organic products for adults.

A panel of judges chosen by Safeway will select local winners among the babies and toddlers in June, and national winners in each age group by July 16.

The local winner gets a $1,000 gift certificate to Dominick's.

The national winner gets the big enchilada -- fame -- on a package of cereal bars.
