I downloaded this song "Baby Bitch" off hpn on the premise of it sounding like Elliott Smith and found it amusing. I commented on it somewhere and this guy ended up sendspacing nearly all of their albums, so I downloaded them. So far I've only listened to "Pure Guava" and I don't quite get what the big deal is. Some people are seriously nuts about this band.

They're by far the best "funny" band, but I find I don't listen to them much. Very talented musicians, though, and sharp songwriters.

I think they're pretty great. Chocolate and Cheese is a modern masterpiece and I can still dig on White Pepper and 12 Golden Country Greats; some of their music does lose a bit of its sheen when you stop taking a ton of drugs though (which I have).

Awesome live band.

"i listened to one album (by a band that has several hundred songs) once and i don't get what the big deal is"

i'm always amused by this reaction to any band.

I didn't quite the fanatacism in the beginning, but definitely came around on them. Gauche, I think you would really Chocolate & Cheese, bro.

Chocolate and Cheese is fantastic, and I haven't listened to 12 Country Greats in forever.

It took me while, but Ween is fun once you realize it's just fun.

Ween is the Creed of weird music.

It makes sense when you realize that 90% of their fanbase is frat boy party crowd.

I saw them live and I about wanted to gouge my eyes out.

their fan base isn't 90% anything, it's a pretty starnge cross section of everyone.

I like them a lot, but I prefer records like Chocolate and Cheese, White Pepper, Quebec, and 12 Golden Country Greats to their earlier records like The Pod, Pure Guava, and GodWeenSatan, where it seemed they were just fucking around the whole time. What naysayers fail to notice amidst all the drugs and juvenile humor is that these guys pretty much transcend every genre they shamelessly satirize with how fucking fine tuned their songcraft skills are.

...and don't forget The Mollusk, that's a great one as well

still never seen them live...tix to their show here start at $50, so I don't know if I'll be seeing them anytime soon...I haven't been to the HOB before so I don't know if the cheaper tickets are worth it

where'd the motherfuckin' cheese go at?

And Kit said it best - although I think Quebec is probably their weakest effort and Pure Guava is brilliant.

The wheels fell off,
The bottom dropped out,
The checks all bounced,
I came in your mouth.

(I wanted to cover that song with my band, but for my inability to keep a straight face during that lyric. Damned if I know how Gener does it.)

I really wish Pizza Hut had run with that.

Ween is great. If you don't get 'em, you don't get 'em. No harm, no foul. I would say it was love at first listen for me. Very cool to listen to an album that has so many different styles, yet retains its musicianship. To put them in the same category as say Bloodhound Gang would be a travesty.

Among Ween fans, this is pretty classic--

I think the more "serious" material is tolerable but a little on the boring side, while the joke-y stuff like "Push Th' Little Daisies" is terrible like Weird Al.

Do you mean more serious-sounding stuff? I don't think there's a Ween song that's genuinely serious. Deadpan, sometimes. Depraved, often. But not serious.

Though maybe I'm reading them wrong. After all there are some who take Type O Negative, Butthole Surfers and The Frogs seriously, so why not Ween.
