I bought a Panasonic five disc changer with tuner and cassette player in 2004 at Best Buy. It's compact and perfect for me because it's a no frills system.

About three weeks ago, I moved it from my bedroom to the living room and since the move, the cd player (all five disc slots) has been skipping like a little girl. I bought a Memorex CD/DVD player cleaner and have used it in every disc holder of the changer, twice. It still skips. I thought it was just due to burned discs since those usually scratch first, but it happened with a brand new Jam disc that I'd never listened to before.

Any ideas on how to fix this? Besides the skipping, it's still a good unit, so I don't want to trash it. Beyond cleaning the lens, I don't know what else to try. I don't have a warranty through Best Buy, so I don't even know how to do further repair to the lens. Any help would be appreciated.

It's not a "good unit" if it's skipping -- buy a new one.

you wouldn't know a good unit if it hit you in the face

I guess by "good unit", I mean I can still listen to the radio on it (the local college station is great) and I can still listen to cassettes on it. Plus, I wire my DVD and TV through it and it works for that.

Plus, buying a new cd player isn't really in the budget.

i have heard of that working for a certain playstation game which i cant remember at the moment. a lot of people were reporting problems with it but turning the whole console on its side made the disc spin differently and fixed the problem. its worth a shot, id say.

How would you know? Has your face experienced many good units?

The reason I suggested it is cuz CD players are so inexpensive these days. I figured it would be worth a new one vs trying to have it repaired.

I thinking Jasmine is looking for a free (or close to it) DIY solution - buying something usually involves forking over some cash.

get a sugar daddy to replace it.

Also, check in pawn shops, maybe you can get a replacement, or just a cd deck that you can plug into the ins on the back.

cats is on the right track--the fact that it started skipping when you moved it strongly suggests that the laser got jostled out of alignment in the move. hell, if you can't afford to fix/replace it, and nothing else works, i'd say try giving it a couple of slaps on the side to see of you can't unjostle it. of course, if this doesn't fix it, it will probably break it completely.

i have a rca cd alarm clock that won't play cd's anymore. whenever i try it, it makes this horrible clicking sound for about 10 seconds. i mean, i don't even have to put a cd in and it makes that sound. i'm thinking about taking it apart and fucking with it.

Beating the shit out of it sounds like a fine idea. That's basically how I got mine to work.

Mine didn't skip, but still... same shit.

I once had a buddy whose CD player would only work if you tapped it 3 times with a ruler, & then blew on it. I'm dead serious.

Are you playing your CD's thru the DVD player now? I guess you wouldn't have the "shuffle" option, but it beats nothing.

I didn't even think of this as an option. Thanks!

My old changer did me well until the think started shooting sparks and damn near blew up. Ended up with a much better unit out of the deal though.
