What do you consider the most significant loss of 1990's musicians?

Obviously they didn't have to die in the 90's, just release albums at that time.

I'm going buckley too. All the others, except maybe hoon, recorded enough output to realize some of their promise and establish a legacy of sorts but buckley only had grace.

Also, the others all essentially took their own lives, and he was drowned trying to cool off after a session. It seems more tragic to me.

Buckley, then Smith, then Cobain.

I don't care about the other 2, they wouldn't have done anything significant.

Also, I'd throw Tim Taylor up there before Cobain.

I chose Buckley. I was most saddened by Elliott Smith's death, but I think in terms of significance I agree with what Phil said about it.

Buckley. He was huge here at the time. Much moreso than America, apparently.

I voted Kurt because I think that his death probably had the most cultural impact. After that it's Biggie and Tupac

Cobain-Overrated
Staley-Overrated
Hoon-Horribly Overrated
Buckley-OK

I voted for Elliot Smith, that was the saddest one for me.

Buckley, of these. Clearly really talented, likely to have made another few real contributions, still listen to him today.

Since Kirsty MacColl was killed in 2000 and few care about her but me, I'll go with Buckley since he probably had a significant body of work ahead of him.

Smith is my favorite artist out of those listed, but I voted Cobain, mostly because I'd love to hear what kind of music he'd be making today.

Me too, have you heard all of the demo's on that box set they released a while back? Some of the new demo's were pretty amazing, and I can only imagine how much better they would sound fleshed out.

Brad Nowell was a great musical mind. I would have liked to have seen if he grew and how.

i think there's a lot of revisionist history going on today about kurt cobain. that and the lack of knowledge of what his death meant at the time to music by the current youth and younger generation. i think in asking the question "biggest loss of the 90s?" you also have to ask "who was the greatest contributor and influence of the 90s?". nirvana wins the answer to that question easy.

i'd also say tupac before layne staley any day.

I voted Buckley but you make a good point.

Also, I meant to put an 'other' in the poll cuz I was drunk and having trouble coming up with too many other deadsies.

I love Kurt. I wish he could have tried life without drugs, or that insane bitch. However I think Nirvana's biggest influence was to make the loud/soft dynamic so popular. I mean 'grunge' was pretty much dropped for marketing albums soon after his death.

I thought the thread was "biggest loss in the 90's" but I guess it's supposed to be "biggest loss of a 90's artist."

Kirsty wasn't influential enough to be biggest loss, but I certainly loved her, particularly Kite.

She probably would have gone on and had 15 more years of a Sam Phillips type of career, wouldn't have impacted much of anything. And I'd have probably liked all the albums.
