Rolling Stone reports: We were curious/suspicious when we got a tip that the url albumsix.com rerouted to the official Weezer web site, Weezer.com. As many of you know, the band famously went on hiatus following the release of their fifth album, Make Believe. When he graduated from Harvard and got married, we figured we’d heard the last of Rivers Cuomo for at least a little while. But then a solo demo for Cuomo’s song “Pig” leaked. And now, with this cryptic rerouting link, we ask the question: Is a new Weezer album on the horizon? We did some research.

According to a domain search, the AlbumSix web site was registered to Interscope Records and not some overzealous Pinkerton fan. The conspiracy theorists will argue “Weezer is on Geffen, not Interscope, duh.” Well, they’re sort of right. Both Geffen and Interscope are bundled under the giant Universal Media Group umbrella, so the plot remains thick.

A query to Weezer publicist Jim Merlis resulted in his insistence that “the band didn’t do this [albumsix.com].” Conclusive…but vaguely hopeful. OK, fine, the band didn’t create the page. (Cuomo went to Harvard but we doubt he knows HTML.) But the question remains: Are there signs that Weezer is prepping a new record? They are under contract for two more albums. Either way, we’ll keep you updated as to whether this recent revelation is truth or hoax.

I could've sworn that I read that Rivers was dropping an album posthaste in the 07. As far as Weezer is concerned, it would be interesting to see if that put out a new album, though I would imagine the worse.

Weren't the Rentals getting together again this year?

Supposedly... But I really wouldn't be interested if it's either a return to the schlock of Return of... or an adventure in progressive folk*.

Seven More Minutes was a perfect album, & with hindsight, the perfect one with which to go out.

* Finally got this term, this prog-folk, today, when driving home from work & thinking on the hipster record-store's hipster clerk's assessment of The! Scarring! Party! (nickisnotdead's post-New Bomb Nationals ("bomb" used in the style of Buddyhead, not as a play on New Bomb Turks... but that would work out, too) band) & The Decemberists. When I said that I really couldn't get a bead on the latter's sound, so the comparison of the former to them really didn't work for me -- in fact, the only Decemberists's song I had heard sounded like They Might Be Giants -- the clerk expounded that he could see that comparison, but added that the Decemberists are "a lot more intelligent". Really, now?

Just because you sing about 13th century Polish princes & 18th century shipping disasters, in polysyllabic verse that's sometimes composed in iambic pentameter, doesn't mean that you are better musicians, nor more intelligent. Or is it suddenly also in vogue to say that Yes is better than Black Sabbath and/or Cheap Trick?

No? Didn't think so.

Really, then, the word-fetish & obscure events dramaturgy is just an attempt to paper over the inability to write a pop song. I mean, if you want to be a professional musician -- i.e., that's how you GET PAID -- but can't work within the mainstream of the idiom, then you should either become a music professor at Grinnell, or join a symphony pops (in Boise, if you have to...). But some people will always try to play in the area of clubs & arenae, prolly for the girls or cocaine or coke-head girls, but always saying "it's about the music, friend". Thing is, their music just is not very pleasant.

After more than a year's worth of inactivity while frontman Rivers Cuomo finished an English degree at Harvard, Weezer has announced they will return with a new album in 2008. According to a recent post from Rivers on the band's website:

We're just polishing up a batch of songs for a recording session that is going to start at the beginning of July, this will be the final recording session for our sixth album, which we aim to put out in the first half of 2008.

The sad thing is that I will probably buy it and end up hating it. For whatever reason I am holding on to the hopr that they will someday return to the excellence that was their first two cds.

I know it doesn't have the hand of the Almighty Yorke on it, but some people may actually still like Weezer. Personally, I am pretty indifferent like most others on the board seem to be. However, it's not like Weezer, at their worst, is remotely as bad as 90% of the rest of the shyte out there these days.

I actually thought that there were some half-way decent tracks on the last cd. Nothing amazing for sure, but It's not complete shit. I thought that maladriot was a really good cd, as well as the Green one. I mean sure none of it has lived up to early Weezer, but it's not that awful.

Like I said. I am indifferent. But it's not like it's K-Fed or something. It's not horrible and it ain't hall of fame worthy, but it is something that if it is on I wouldn't turn off.

Hail to the Thief on the other hand....shit sandwich.

I don't mean to pick on Radiohead. It's just that I know you like them and I bet a Radiohead concert would sell as many arena seats as a Weezer concert. Conjecture, of course, and possibly a silly point. But, I think you know what I mean.

some people like apples, and some people like oranges but both are shitty if you leave them in the sun too long.
