I am writing a paper about the portrayal of women in Bond films (the topic is actually much more specific than that description) and I have been having a discussion with my friends about who their favorite Bond is. Mine, to be honest, is probably Daniel Craig after watching 19 of the 21 Bond films so far. Maybe it is because it is so current and contemporary and the visuals are up to par with the technological age we are in or maybe it is because I think he is probably a better actor than all of the others combined. In that same way, a lot of people argue that Connery was their favorite, but after watching most of his films, I can't get past how bad those movies are. Moore is slightly better. Many people hate Dalton and i don't know why because I enjoy his version.

Anyway, gimmie a vote.

EDIT: This has nothing to do with how true these stories are to the books, etc. So try not to take that into account if you happen to be some crazy James Bond fan.

Connery defined the role. Period.
But I though that Brosnan was damn good in it, too.

Moore solely on point-of-entry bias. Craig could win me over, though.

Sean Connery is a stud. He gets my vote. He's classy and charming and I could actually envision him as a spy in real life.

I grew up in the Roger Moore era of Bond flicks, so I vote for him... (For Your Eyes Only, Moonraker, etc...)

Though Daniel Craig had me enthralled with Casino Royale. Definitely feel he could give Connery a run for his money. Moore was decent in some of the films(I have a weakness for Man with the Golden Gun).

And Dalton and Brosnan were laughable.

daniel craig is good as a new type of tough bond (probably more like what ian fleming had in mind when he was writing the novels), but connery made james bond into a franchise. had connery played bond the way that the novels portray him, they'd've made one movie and you'd never've heard of bond again. but connery played him so fucking cool and sexy that every guy wanted to be him and every girl wanted to fuck him.

you're out of your fucking mind. goldfinger and from russia with love are bad? and moore is better than connery? and which dalton "version" are you talking about - licence to kill or the living daylights?

my favorite is that one scene where Connery is making out with the girl and sees the reflection of a lurker with a club in the girl's naked eye, so he turns her into the blow, resulting in her getting whacked in the face.

Well, I said Moore is slightly better than Connery, IMO. Looking at films alone, again just my opinion, they both had decent movies and really horrible ones. IMO, Dr. No and Diamonds are Forever are ATROCIOUS films and View to a Kill and Moonraker are some of the most ridiculous Bond movies I have seen. I think I like Moore better because of his delivery, he came across as a bit better at being smooth than Connery did.

Bond Girl being used loosely, I would say that one of my favorites is Famke Janssen as Xenia Onatopp in Goldeneye. She was one of the first female characters that was a villain and stayed a villain to the end and was not suckered by the Bondfluence--the charm, wit, and mysogyny of his character, whereas in previous films, even the villainous women were really just villainous because they were under the oppressive control of the real villainous man (see Man with the Golden Gun for a good example of what I mean).

One of the craziest scenes from the Bond movies that I have watched was when Bond was getting ready to get down to business with Ms. Goodnight, a fellow agent for MI6 but the villain's woman (Ms. Anders) who was betraying Scaramanga came in. Bond puts Ms. Goodnight, in her skimpy nighty into the closet and proceeds to sleep with Ms. Anders with the other agent in the closet the whole time. I think Betty Friedan would have a massive coronary if she bothered herself to go see that Bond film.

Edit: Living Daylights Dalton is the one that I remember thinking was ok. License to Kill is one I have seen many times but is currently in the 2 of 21 that I have not watch yet again for my paper.

While Connery is the OG of the Bonds, my vote went to Roger Moore -- uber sexy spy.

I'm in this camp. First Bond movie I saw was Moonraker as a kid so Roger Moore was the bond I grew up with.

Also, Connery may have made it a franchise but hell, Moore has done as many Bond films as him. They each did 7.

the first bond i saw was the living daylights and so maybe you oldsters can't fathom it, but roger moore comes off as so cheesy and ridiculous when i watch those movies now. he was definitely better as simon templar anyway.

roger moore comes off as quite cheesy in some of those movies. it's pathetic cheesy. but the first one with jaws was good. and the one with the two comical assassins.

the first dalton movie with abo was laughable but the second dalton movie was good. he might've turned out ok if given more of a shot.

a couple brosnan movies worked.

just saw "casino royale" a couple weeks ago. it worked but i need to see more from him to determine how much i like his bond style.

Maybe we can fathom it and just don't care. Settle down, Beavis.

Let's just hope you don't list Moonraker as your favorite Bond movie.

On an unrelated note, I had to watch The Spy Who Loved Me last night again and my girlfriend asked me which one I was going to watch. I accidentally called it The Spy Who Shagged Me. I got a hearty laugh from the fact that Austin Powers has affected my subconscious so much.

Moore was definitely my point of entry, but I think he's the worst Bond. I voted Connery.

If you ask my sister, she'll tell you it's all about Pierce Brosnan.

Also, that's kind of his schtick. Moore made Bond more light-hearted and tongue in cheek. It was entertainment James Bond. Hell, the Bond theme songs were being sung by Carly Simon and Sheena Easton during those late 70's/early 80's years for god's sake.

Bond isn't high art. Everyone will have a different take on this.


I will say I did like Casino Royale more than anything Timothy Dalton or Pierce Brosnan did.

Connery. Keep in mind that Diamonds are Forever was a film he didn't want to do, he'd already left the franchise and was lured back.
