So Rodney... have you been to 5th Quadrant yet? I've been meaning to check it out... it was on the short list of places to meet up last night.

Hey, no fair.....as a former PDXer I don't want to hear about all the cool new places that hav openned in the 9 years since I moved away....

If you like it though D, let me know, I come down often enough to visit family that I might be interested in checking it out....

Still am sore over Apizza Scholls changing their days off to include Sundays - My wife and I always tried to schedule a stop on our way home.

Haven't been to Apizza Scholls yet, but I hear how much I'm missing out. Even Anthony Bourdain has been there already. Roll credits!

Seriously, Chrome, so much new has opened here. Next time you're in town, give me and Rod a jingle and we'll meet up somewhars. There are several new bars opening in North Portland that I'm kinda jazzed about trying.

Rod, you know about some new place called Terrior, on the corner of Fremont and MLK?

And the PDX talk is way less annoying here.

5th quadrant - pretty cool place. Decent pub type food and good strong beers. Service can be a tad spotty. Its a Lompoc-owned place.

There are a bunch of new restaurants up here in NoPo. Terroir is a wine bar type place. Next to Wonder Ballroom is a new spanish tapas place called Toro Bravo - very good. Plus a really good new Mexican place on Mississippi called Trebol

I don't even know what it means.

PDX is the airport code for Portland, Oregon. I have no clue where the 'X' comes into play.

This reminds me: when did the "hip" thing to do become referring to your city by its airport's shorthand? Did this bloom from Southeast U.S. rappers talking about the 'ATL'?

ChicagObners, do you call it the ORD? DC Obs, it is the DCA? Tania, et. al., do you speak of the LAX?

I don't refer to LA as "LAX" nor do I refer to California as "Cali".

Umm... ATL are the first three letters of Atlanta, so maybe the airport code has nothing to do with that one. PDX is somewhat more obvious.

Apparently, ATL is also the FAA shorthand for Jackson-Hartsfield Airport. So, my point still holds. Sorry to disappoint.

I dunno why people call it pdx here, but sometimes it easier to write pdx than portland. And people here know what you're talking about, so....

speaking of pdx... did an amazing 45 mile ride yesterday, from the Hawthorne District, out the Springwater, crossing 26, looping back around through Troutdale (with some seriously rolling hills), crossing north under I-84, down Marine Drive and back down the 205 trail. My legs are feeling it today. After my ride on the 4th, I was so wiped it wasn't even funny. Looked at my log when I got home... oh, that's because the last time I had ridden my bike was May 12.

Abbreviations are always more utile. Thus, the name.

Only if you live in Ada, Okla., say, would using an abbreviation not lessen the work in writing the name of your town of residence.

But my question remains: when did airport/seaport/first-three-letters-of-the-name shorthand become the preferred, or, at least, hipster-approved, usage? (Excluding NYC, DC, & LA, of course, as those are long-standing usages & not (directly) tied to inveterate hipsterism.)

Yes, I'm aware of that, but that does nothing to prove your assumption that the airport code is the source of the slang. With no additional information given, the match is merely circumstancial.

I am disappointed. I thought your (edit: not logic as much as) critical thinking skills were better than that.
