I don't know. Nothing is radically different in all those models as the ones the companies put up against ipod to begin with. The only thing I really see is the wifi ability.

For my money, the Creative Zen Vision is the Ipod killer, and you can get 30 gigs of it for about $100

There are two problems that I see:

1. To me, in my microcosm of a world, everyone that wants an mp3 player has an mp3 player--be it ipod or other.

2. In order for you to win over ipod fans, you have to offer them something new and different. I doubt multiple file formats is a draw, or price, or hell even the snazzy video playback.

Think of it this way, you don't think apple isn't already looking at all the specs, and implementing them into the next ipod? I would think wifi/touch screen/bigger screen/etc would all be in the next update.

Also, whats the big draw with wifi/internet on a mp3 player when more and more things in yr pocket is super connected to mult. things?

The Archos that was mentioned is still $475+$70 s/h. Not exactly a deal for 80gigs.

i have a 30 gb video ipod too but i cant be bothered with itunes so it just sits there

I've only had two players: a shit 20gb Philips that I won from CMJ which died after about two months, and my current 1gb Sansa, and that's really all I need. I can fit a fair number of albums onto it, I listen to it in the car and some at work for about a week, clear it out and put a new batch of stuff on. Good enough.

Never felt it necessary to have my entire library availble at all times (although that top-end Tripper V could almost do it), play videos or any of that stuff. Maybe I'm just easy to please.

If you can't put Rockbox on it, I'm not interested.

As far as I know, no one is selling more then 8 gigs of flash, at least not at any reasonable price

I got a 60gb Creative Vision M and love it. I didn't think I'd really use the video feature and got it for the size, but I'll watch stuff on the plane or the train ride to work and it helps kill the time. I've been watching the VH1 doc Heavy: The history of Metal for the last week now and it rocks.

Like the article said, "when we use the term iPod Killer it is with tongue firmly planted in cheek." The next-gen Ipod will bury all of these.

Although those Barbie mp3 players are pretty tempting. What's Apple got to go up against those? More white or black boxes? You can't compete with Barbie.
