Yes. My favorite Coltrane album.

Although it's more in the direction of free jazz than the stuff you have. It's not too far off from A Love Supreme, but it's generally wilder and more intense. It's not as extreme as some of his other later albums, though, and is a pretty balanced record in terms of dissonant free jazz vs. prettier, more melodic stuff.

Pharoah Sanders plays with Coltrane on this album, and this is also my favorite of any of Sanders stuff that I've heard.

It depends on whether you want a complete glimpse of Coltrane's career. It also depends on how "out" you like your jazz. If A Love Supreme is pushing it, then this is not for you. Meditations is very noisy stuff. I don't listen to it often, but when I do, it's because I really like the cacophony and there's a real sense of Coltrane connecting with his vision of God in the music. It's very spiritual sounding. It would really round out a small Coltrane collection - you'd have good bits that represent everything he accomplished.

But don't miss out on other works of his - the Village Vanguard 4-disc set is killer. Also really nice is the just-released My Favorite Things: Coltrane at Newport that collects his previously released Newport performances in one disc, with one track expanded by something like 8 minutes. It's excellent, as is One Up, One Down from last year. (I listen to more live Coltrane than studio Coltrane, actually.)

You've got a good base... Meditations is great but My Favorite Things, Coltrane with Johnny Hartman, the recent RVG of Soultrane are must haves.

Check out the Complete Africa/Brass Sessions. It sounds like it's in the same era you dig and is really melodic without going too far into free territory. It's got a really ingenious line-up/configuration. PMifyouwant.

I second the Africa/Brass, and the 1961 Live At The Village Vanguard (2CD or the nice 4 Disc package), and also add another favorite from 1961:

From the AMG review:
Quote:
Historically, it's worth noting that recording had already commenced — two days prior to this session — on Africa/Brass, Coltrane's debut for the burgeoning Impulse! label. The two discs complement each other, suggesting a shift in the larger scheme of Coltrane's musical motifs. The assembled musicians worked within a basic quartet setting, featuring Coltrane (soprano/tenor sax), McCoy Tyner (piano), and Elvin Jones (drums), with double-bass chores held down by Art Davis and Reggie Workman. Added to that are significant contributions and interactions with Freddie Hubbard (trumpet) and Eric Dolphy (flute and alto sax). Dolphy's contract with another record label prevented him from being properly credited on initial pressings of the album. The title track is striking in its resemblance to the Spanish influence heard on Miles Davis' Sketches of Spain. This is taken a bit further as Coltrane's combo stretches out with inspired improvisations from Dolphy, Hubbard, Tyner, and Coltrane, respectively. "Olé" likewise sports some amazing double-bass interaction. The combination of a bowed upright bass played in tandem with the same instrument that is being plucked has a sinister permeation that assuredly excited Coltrane, who was perpetually searching from outside the norms. The haunting beauty of "Aisha" stands as one of the finest collaborative efforts between Tyner — the song's author — and Coltrane. The solos from Hubbard, Dolphy, and an uncredited Tyner gleam from within the context of a single facet in a multi-dimensional jewel.
