Seriously, does he remind anyone else of the dude from Phantasm?

But put in Anthology or Pack up the Plantation, or Damn the Torpedoes and turn that fucker up.

"So You wanna be a rock and roll star" (Byrds Cover)
"The Waiting"
"Breakdown"
"Rebels"
"Yer So Bad"

The list only goes on.

I'm sure it's not indie enough for some, but damn if I don't like some good ol Gar rock every now and then.

NP: Pack up the Plantation

I'm with you there, he's always been a good fallback. I even like that Rick Rubin album he did 'Wildflowers'. You can't doubt the guy's talent.

Love the older, grittier TP. Exspecially, 1976 Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers and 1978 You're Gonna Get It!

"Tom Petty. He's like a cross between a frog and ... nothing!"

Lots of good Tom Petty...American Girl's probably my favorite, although refugee's pretty damn good too.

Indie? No.

Awesome? Yes.

One of my all-time favorites, without a doubt. He hasn't done anything worth a shit since the very, very underrated She's The One soundtrack, but I am confident he's still got qual left in him.

Angus Scrimm: best fucking name ever. well, for a creepy dude like that anyway...

just found this on imdb. curious.

Quote:
Has been nominated several times for Grammy awards for his liner notes. He has won at least one grammy award. That is, he won exactly one Grammy Award as his alter-ego Rory Guy. The category was "Best Album Notes, Classical" and he won for his notes on "Korngold: The Classic Erich Wolfgang Korngold" in 1974.

I rented a movie with him in it just because of that name.

It was not a good movie.

I was just talking about him the other weekend. The Strokes totally rip his late 70s stuff off. Petty has always beena guilty pleasure for me.

I've always liked him. Some great tunes that work on both a get-trashed level and an intellectual one. Critics seem to have had a hard time with his straightforward lyrics at times, but I've always liked the fact the Petty is very good at painting the outlines of storylines with his lyrics and letting the listener fill in the details. There's an art form to that. Economy of imagery is not the same as lyrically sucking, I don't think.

Petty got a better drummer and isn't afflicted by the Fonz/artiste personal dichotomy.

Because it doesn't sound like most of his classic stuff and reminds me of most of Rick Rubin's other somewhat spare productions. I like 'You Don't Know How it Feels' and 'Time to Move On'. It doesn't sound like 'American Girl' and others. So to re-qualify, I even like 'Wildflowers' despite its departure from his more traditional/classic sound.

And it spawned the B-Side "Girl on LSD" which was played a lot at parties the year it came out. I really like that album, I enjoy the She's the One Sdtk, but haven't really bothered with anything after that.

'She's the One' is the last one I've listen to as well. I've never even heard 'Echo' or 'The Last DJ'.

Just listened to him heading towards the Evergaldes last weekend. I was a huge fan in high school.

long time favorite songs:

Straight into Darkness
You got lucky
Change of Heart
Even the Losers
When the time comes
Magnolia
the entire Hard Promises album
Dont Come around Here
Make it Better
Southern Accents
Spike
Jammin' Me
Runaway trains
A self Made Man
Think About Me

and above mentioned and more

...as far as Cougar, yeah I liked some of his albums when I was a teen. I think he has penned a few good songs. I still own Big Daddy and yes Scarecrow and listen more out of nostaglia than for what it merits.

Yep, and I think Petty has fully copped to that comparison.

I like Tom Petty.

That's really all I've got, but somehow felt I needed to add it anyway.
