Phipps Conservatory in Pittsburgh has a bunch of blown glass pieces throughout. We didn't get to see them at night (they're lighted then) but a friend took these.
The artist seems is known as "eye patch guy".

A genius. If you've ever been in the Bellagio lobby in LV, you've seen it.

Chihuly's work is great, we've got a pretty sweet one in Milwaukee. That sweet looking dude came with it too.

This guy had an exhibit at the Atlanta Botanical Gardens a couple years ago that I went to.

There were a couple that were huge. Like this one:

We saw one here in KC a few years back, too - probably the same one. Really, really cool stuff.

the weird thing about this guy is that he basically has a factory churning out this stuff. he just comes by every once in a while and signs off on everything.

I've always been interested in learning the art of glassblowing but I've always heard how bad it is for you and your lungs. I wonder how they do these...cheap immigrant workers?

This big tower at the Children's Museum in Indianapolis is pretty staggering.

yeah and he also sued some blowers who made designs inspired by nature as though he owns a copyright on the seashell. he's an asshole.

The dirty little secret about this guy is that he personally hasn't blown glass in something like over 20 years. All the stuff you see comes from a stable of artists that work under his name and get none of the recognition.

it's hardly a dirty little secret.
so many artists-particularly sculptors-have staffs that assist/make the art under their supervision.

jeff koons, robert longo, damien hirst...the list is endless.

the "commercial" art world is even crazier: I have a buddy who does stuff under about five different aliases that countless underlings have reproduced for him and the guy who is above him is even bigger. We always randomly see their shit in hotel lobbies or even on TV.

A couple of those glass sculture thingys are pretty cool I gotta say.

That seems awful to me. I don´t know much about the art scene; but why isn't this practice actively frowned upon? Or just straight up verbotten? This seems to rip all the integrity out of the art.

how else could one person create that tower monstronsity, for instance. the art just wouldnt get made. i happen to think its better that it did. i dont feel that it necessarily cheapens the product

This kind of practice has gone on forever, though. Dali, Rembrandt, lots of artists have used studios full of assistants after their work became really in-demand.

Doesn't necessarily make it a good thing. There's always been a perceived value to authenticity in art, and while some artists have more consciously and directly challenged that, most of these big name artists are simply dismissing it, generally in favor of simply making more money. And you can often tell with the old painters which ones they did and which ones were done by their assistants.

I certainly don't have a problem with an artist not constructing some huge sculpture all by himself so long as he's actually been the one to design it and supervise the construction. It sounds like some of these people may become a little less involved than that over time, but it doesn't bother me that Chihuly doesn't blow the glass himself. Glass blowing can be pretty hazardous to your health.
