For those of you who have tried both, please vote on which you prefer, and feel free to post your reasons why.

I sent Clever Cactus invitations to everyone for whom I have an e-mail address, but if you didn't receive an invitation and would like one, all you have to do is send me a PM!

Explain the differences, please. I missed the WASTE explosion and haven't really tried CleverCactus yet.

You're not going to get much a vote considering you only had about 5 people sign up for WASTE in the first place. I say pick one, recruit a bunch of Obnish so we'll have a bigger pool of music to pull from.

Good point about not many people getting into WASTE to begin with, which is why we tried Clever Cactus. Every single person who has tried Clever Cactus so far, including both PC and Apple/Mac users, has successfully connected. There were a myriad of connectivity and compatibility problems with WASTE that we were unable to overcome.

In my mind, it's a no-brainer, but I'm not running a dictatorship here...obner IS democracy in action! Let the people decide!!!

No electoral college here...it's all popular vote all the time!

Both allow folder sharing/browsing.
Both have chat.
Both are private and let you decide which users to include/exclude.

The differences between the two are:
1. Connectivity
WASTE has tons of connectivity problems, and a confusing/clunky interface.
CC has yet to show us any connectivity problems, and it has a very clean and easy-to-navigate interface.
2. Compatibility
WASTE has both PC and Apple/Mac versions, but we were never able to get the two to connect with each other.
CC has both, and we are able to connect to both with no problem.
3. Administration
WASTE required a constant updating of user access keys and IPs.
CC doesn't require keeping IPs on file. Once you add a user, they'll show up every time they are on line.

It's really more Bush-Dukakis than Bush-Kerry.

Seems more like Bush-Clinton to me. Looks like skipping WASTE wasn't a problem.

I think this comparison answers your poll question. Sound to more like Beta vs. VHS if you ask me.

Edit: I think the only missing is the following:
Overall
WASTE licks ass
CC does my laundry and is teaching me to self-suck

the answer depends on how many people sign up and how big our network can get. seems like the setup & user interface on cactus is better and works for everyone.

Cactus seems significantly slower in transfer speed though...anyone else experiencing this?

np: Public Enemy "It'll take a nation of millions..."

The speed correlates with the number of files you download simultaneously. Change the setting to just 1-2 files at a time, and your speed will increase significantly. It will also depend on each user's connection (DSL, Cable, Dial-Up, etc.).

So If CC is so much better, why even run a poll?

Because I wanted to be fair and give everyone a chance to weigh in. I didn't want to just force my opinion as the ultimate decision. Let's get a consensus. That, and smafty seems to prefer WASTE.

CC. I was up and running in a matter of minutes without any headaches or problems.

The file transfer aspect is still yet to be determined. I can't browse FT's files. Do you have any shared?

With Clever Cactus, I still can't figure out how to:

1. Edit my password.
2. Change my default directory for saving files. It gives me an error when I change it to "My Music" Maybe it doesn't like spaces.
3. I can't browse FT's files.
4. No one else is on for me to try it on.

I need to be invited to see others lists. Invite me at: timmyjoe42 at juno dot com

Edit: with Waste, I kept getting disconnected. Reconnecting was easy enough, but I might be down for a few hours and not know it and thus others wouldn't be able to get files from me.

FT,

The transfer speeds I was referring to were between you and I for less files...so unless you are on a different computer with a slower connection it seems significantly slower.

I don't plan on doing massive downloads though so I don't care that much...just making an observation.

TJ, I sent you an invite.

I got it. You appear offline to me.
I have shared My Music folder with you, and shmoo, who is also offline. FT is away, and I can't browse his files.

Everytime I log out/ in it seems to reset the folder I have shared.

Edit: FYI, I think you need to do "Edit/ Sync with Share Web" each time you add someone so they appear in your list.

Cactus is slow as hell, and the interface still has a long way to go.
But it works, and it appears secure.

FYI...

onebrownjeff just downloaded a track from me at 51.5 KB/s, so there doesn't seem to be ANYTHING wrong with Clever Cactus. It obviously all depends on the individual user's connection.

Tell that to the people dl'ing stuff from me (on dsl) at 1.5-2.5 kb/s. Don't know why my connection via clever cactus is so slow. My connection isn't slow via anything else.

How do I ask someone (via email) to add me to his or her 'share' list? I couldn't quite figure that out. I tried to use the add/invite feature, but it just told me that Tim and others were part of my network already.

If they are logged into Clever Cactus at the time, just ask them via chat. Otherwise, shoot 'em a PM here on obner.

I'm on now, but don't see anyone except FT, and it says you're not online. Am I missing a step?
