How can anyone listen to them?

I always see the name around, and always get them mixed up with like Frog Eyes and Black Dice and all these other two name bands that seem to be interchangable...

But I got some Wolf Eyes pins today, cuz there was a grabbag at Music Millenium, and like...so I decided it was finally time to check them out.

Downloaded the song on the Subpop site and got a headache in like 13 seconds.

Someone want to explain their appeal to me? I'd rather listen to "hardcore" than what I began to hear.

Appeal - not much. It's just really intense music and there's not much else out there like it. I'm sure some of the noise afficianados on the board will provide examples to prove me otherwise....
It's just pure, visceral, modern noise. A lot of times I think they just have a really wicked sense of humor.
It's not supposed to be pleasurable.

Yeah, but that doesn't mean there should be things out like it. There are such things as bad ideas.

With that said, I've only listened to Slicer, which I actually found to be pleasurable. This was during the week I tried to get into "experimental" music. However, the article on CMJ turned me off to the possibility of listening to their newer stuff. I don't want to listen to bad noise for the sake of listening to bad noise.

I wouldn't say it's bad noise at all, but maybe I've developed a bit of a resistance to noise that this particularly isn't bad. I don't listen to a lot of stuff like this, though, and would say that I have more of an aversion to, like you say, "hardcore", which to me can be more piercing than Wolf Eyes, which is more guttural, visceral. It's deep noise. It's funk: listen to "Village Oblivia": that's a baaad aaaass romp. It's minimal, believe it or not, which I like. It's analog manipulation, which is as organic as noise can get, in a way.

I don't think it's the greatest album, and doesn't get tedious. I do really like it, though. Why is this the only band I ever post about here?

Wolf Eyes defines the term "not for everybody".

Everyone has a threshold for where stuff like this stops being enjoyable and no longer feels like music. For me, stuff like Kevin Drumm - Sheer Hellish Miasma and Toshimaru Nakamura/Sachiko M - Do crosses this threshold, and isn't really something I ever want to listen to. I know some people really like both recordings, however, and I respect that.

I really enjoy Wolf Eyes, though. I think they're the real deal. They're an actual band, and they make actual music. It has distinct rhythm and timbre if not necessarily melody. I enjoy it. It feels exciting and sometimes dangerous. Their live sound is absolutely searing. I listened to them for a few seconds at a time without my earplugs, and it felt like waves of electricity were going through my body. It felt good. Unfortunately, I didn't want to give myself hearing damage (any worse than I already have) so I kept them in for most of the show.

I just think it's fun in the same way that metal, industrial, or hardcore can be fun. It just seems to push that sort of thing a little farther and keep it interesting.

Of course I don't expect to change anyone's opinion of them by saying any of this. You like them or you don't. If you have to ask other people why they like them, chances are it just isn't your thing.

Ok, so I just downloaded Stabbed in the Face off of Wolf Eyes' web site, and the following things happened to me:

-I had a seizure for the first time in my life.
-I came to in a pool of drool with my own wallet stuck in my mouth.
-I may or may not have crapped my pants.
-For some strange reason, I think I sort of liked it.

Stabbed in the Face's original cover was much better. it was someone getting, hmm, stabbed in the face.

That song ain't too bad. Maybe I should stop reading about this band, since they seem very unappealing to me on paper. Not that they're completely appealing to my ears, but some of it is enjoyable.

See, I'm the opposite...I thought they were appealing on paper.

But I want to die when I hear them.
