I can't tell if this series plays the hard drinking, sexual harassing, no means yes, ahhhh thing too hard, or if it just looks like good TV.

Here's a clip

I guess I could have dug up a thread dealing with advertising, AMC, or TV in general, but I felt this might warrant a new thread. Our barrister in chief may feel differently, and can feel free to move this to whatever thread he sees "fitter."

As for the "ATL speak," I think most boarders with a modicum of reading comprehension have long since figured out what these terms mean.

If a seven martini lunch was acceptable I may actually have some sort of desire to be gainfully employed.

And, yeah, I'd like to watch this at least a time or two.

Is "Mad Men" a TV program about advertising? I don't feel like clicking on the link. When is it on? Which channel?

It's too early for me to use my reading comprehension.

This actually makes watching Beckham play soccer seem like a viable alternative.

It's on AMC and yes, it's about advertising Mad = Madison Ave. It takes place "back in the day."

Specifically 1960. It's interesting what they say about it being on the cusp of what we consider the modern world. It starts pre-JFK's election, and obviously before Beatlemania and the cultural touchstones we all consider "The Sixties." I am thinking that they want it to continue into those times, and show how the changing world affected the habits and workstyle of men like the ones portrayed.

Starts tomorrow at 10EST/9 Slow Time

Speaking of AMC, Goodfellas debuts on that channel tomorrow night.
I know it isn't as good with the commercial breaks and lack of gratuitous swearing, but I know I will be watching. It will probably last as long as Das Boot did when they showed it a few weeks ago.

I'mma go with Gar's gut feeling that it laid the proto alpha male schtick on too thick. And not much in the way of story to make me come back, though I guess that's forgivable since this was just the first episode establishing the characters.

Give it a B-

True enough. I also give it some leeway based on the theory that most first episodes of a series kinda suck (yes, even The Wire).

I will definitely watch it again; DVR set for the season. I mean, what else are you gonna watch?

After much discussion with Bloor and others, I bought the S1 DVD Set. They played it too heavily in the first episode, but once you get into the heads of Roger Sterling, Don Draper and Bert Cooper, it's hard to put down. Plus the fact that every one of the male characters are borderline sociopaths who drink, screw and mong their way to the top, I found it very enjoyable.

Need to get on the stick about watching S2

I screamed through S1 OnDemand, and picked up on S2 this Sunday. I think it's funny that NO ONE on this show is likeable, aside from maybe Cooper.

I love Draper's philosophy on advertising, too. He's had some spot-on lines.
