We all have favorites, but, if you could only hear ONE song for the rest of your life, what would it be --- and why????

For me, I think "Blue Sky" by The Allman Brothers. It doesn't fit the *stereotype* of most songs we talk about here, but, about 5 years ago, I was driving down the same stretch of Mopac where I took the pic of Hank that serves as my avatar and just got lost in the song -- somehow, the guitar solo in the middle of the song transcended the moment on the highway. When I came out of the daze, I just sort of decided that "Blue Sky" was the most perfect song ever written simply because I was *lost* in that moment without thinking of the traffic, work ahead, etc. The song continues to elevate me beyond my troubles even now. . .

Anyway, as I said in my earlier post, I've been drinking --- which lead me to being curious about what your favorite song is and why it is your *favorite song*?

Thanks - rest easy m'friends. . .

Trevor

this is such a tough question, but if i'd have to single one out as being truly scrumptrilescent, it'd probably be:

Carl Lewis - The Human Chain (Never Break It Up)

that would probably be the deepest i have ever been moved, by music, that is.

john coltrane - i'm old fashioned

this song has inspired me more than any other piece of music i've ever heard. to think, to love, to grow. no other tune has ever given me such positive vibes.

i can thank my father for this.

For right now, I'm going with "Cotton" by the illustrious Mountain Goats, if only for the catharsis/modivation it is gining me right now...*

"Cotton is, by no means, my favorite MG song".....

The Band with The Staples Singers, "The Weight" from The Last Waltz

Humorous when you're feeling up, soothing when you're little down. A little bit country, a little bit gospel with four different lead singers with different styles to mix it up a bit. Robbie Robertson's twangy guitar and Garth Hudson's wobbly organ. Harmonies from the sisters.

Plus, there are a number of interpretations about what the hell this song is talking about. Oddball religious references, is "the load" really the clap, changes in place and time, or was Robbie Robertson telling the truth when he said it's about a normal person unable to fill a seemingly simple obligation presented unto him?

I don't fucking care. It's fun, it's versatile, and if I'm stuck with it, it gives me a lot to work with.

'Summers Kiss/Faded" by the Afghan Whigs.

Have heard the song 1000's of times by now, and gives still gives me shivers and chilles, EVERY single time.

"Ebony and Ivory"

It's, like, about a piano, but then you could take it to be about people getting along and stuff. But then, like, if you don't want anything too heavy and all, it can just be about a piano. I think that guy from The Who did it with Ray Charles or something.

I have to go with the #1 song from my Listmania! song list: "Baker Street" by Gerry Rafferty. It manages to be both intimate and epic, and it never fails to fill me with a beautiful wave of nostalgia. Every time I hear it, I am immediately transported back to the Summer of '78, when I was fast approaching 12 and starting to discover my independence for the first time. Both my parents worked, so each day was a new adventure, including frequent forays into the local pool halls.

Great song; we used to cover it in that style and I always got laughs for my impersonation of Rick Danko during his verse. Ha Ha.

I like God Only Knows by the Beach Boys. A somewhat pedestrian choice to be sure, but LISTEN! It has the perfect combination of simplistic innocence, almost children's music, yet at the same time is complex and dense. And it is a really sweet sentiment.

Either that or Bobby Brown Goes Down by Frank Zappa.

"Tubular Bells" by Mike Oldfield...

No, I mean, "Echoes" by Pink Floyd...

Or, if you mean, "normal" length songs, "Dream On" by Aerosmith. It just crackles with an energy, despite being a "softer" song.

Blue, no purple....aaaaaahhhhh!

Sorry, I know I violated the rule, but I was going from memory, and couldn't find google corroboration with my initial silly search, and then got lazy and just posted.

I mean I don't listen to jam music all that much anymore but this just popped in my head. I have probably listened to it like 300 times. At 17 minutes that is 5100 minutes. Well over 3 days.

The Ronettes-Be My Baby.

The opening drum sound alone makes it perfect.

Dinosaur Jr. - 'What Else is New'

Favorite song from my favorite band. Cool guitar work and very moving overall.

Good job on 'Blue Sky' by the way, one of my favorite songs to travel to and one of the best songs I've ever heard live.

Hard question & I can always change this answer.

Wave of Mutialtion changed the way I listen to music, so I think I lean to that one.
