Going down the list of recent Rough Trade releases, I make a list of things I wanna check out. And, the realization begins to set in that I'll never get to listen to everything I want to in my lifetime.

Like this for instance:

momus -- otto spooky -- 'Otto Spooky' is the new album from Momus, otherwise known as Scotsman Nick Currie - perhaps the world's most infamous singer of electronic folk songs. Momus is old, but he keeps fresh by moving around the world - since the late 90s he's lived in London, Paris, New York, and Tokyo, and he's currently to be found housed in the communist opulence of the Karl Marx Allee in East Berlin. 'Otto Spooky' is the record David Bowie would have made if he'd worked on 'Lodger' with ex-members of The Incredible String Band instead of ex-members of Roxy Music. It's a travelogue in the sort of psychedelic folk style that sentimental computers use when they sing around camp fires, high on Liquid Crystal Diodes. 'Otto Spooky' shares its flavor of gentle pagan sensuality (there's a wink in the direction of cult British horror film 'The Wicker Man') with the record Momus recorded in 2003 with French computer folk musician Anne Laplantine, 'Summerisle'.

Think about all the cool music you're going to miss out on once you're dead.

Classic songs from bands who's members aren't even born yet. Albums that change the face of popular(and indie) music. Performers who everyone knows by just their first names

You'll never hear any of it.

Depressing aint it?

Love it when the older kids go at it.

Quiet you; I'm not complaining about not having enough music. I mean I HAVE enough Stones,Beatles,Dylan and Pixies to keep me happy.

I live with this every day of my life.

And the more CD's I get only give me less and less time to give fair listens to everything else i have..in which then makes it harder and harder for me to embrace a record cause there are always 8-10 still sitting there without having been played once....

its a bad cycle....

only solution in my mind is to go on a buying halt.....and spend a good six months or so, just listening and relistening to what i have....

but that will never happen....

i have so many cd's that i like that only have gotten 2 listens cause i dont have enough time in the day....

sigh...
why'd you start this dumb topic.....

dont even get me started on my DVD's or books?!

Cuz I know others share my pain.

I just ended a 5 month hiatus from buying new music. Did it help? No. Just made my "To Buy" list that much longer.

The more I think about it, I'm pretty sure we'd ALL love this to become the REDLANDS version of Blue Man Group. The only question that remains is whether Derris or Pagoda will be the third. The other will have to assume the Tobias Funke role.

Momus is one of my favourite lyricists ever. Although I have to admit to having fallen a little behind in some of his releases. Part of the problem is NOT SEEING THEM IN STORES, though, so I blame distribution.

EDIT: L, screw MP3's, just do a search on "Momus lyrics" to get an idea.

Peter, I'm fairly certain that I've only heard a couple of Momus' songs -- what would you recommend to a beginner like me? Frankly, this new album sounds highly intriguing.

First of all, please do feel free to call me Dusty. I actually do answer to that in real life.

Actually, he recently came out with a compilation that I found enjoyable, Forbidden Software Timemachine (Best Of The Creation Years 1987-1993). I think he was totally "on" during his period from Ping Pong to about Oskar Tennis Champion, especially Little Red Songbook.

If you want one single track by him to download, I would have to recommend A Complete History of Sexual Jealousy (Pts. 17-24). Or The Penis Song.

WARNING: MANY OF HIS LYRICS ARE NOT WORK-SAFE. AS A MATTER OF FACT, THEY'RE NOT DRIVING SAFE.

I distinctly remember one particular incident where I was laughing so hard I had to pull over. I couldn't see.

i have over 28k of mp3s on my hard-drive and often listen to it on random because there's no way i'll ever listen to all that older music straight-through again as long as i'm so avidly listening to new music. it's a pleasant conundrum -- too much good music to listen to.

I think that having too much music to buy/listen to is exciting...

I like the fact that right now, somewhere, someone is listening to a CD that would blow my mind to shreads, if only for a few minutes, and I'll never hear it...

With music (as in obner), the chase is part of the fun...

That being said, it's time for the Wedding Present box to go onto the IPod in preparation of their new disk, and the new LCD Soundsystem, and the new Trembling Blue Stars, and Bloc Party, and so on and so forth...
