Based on these photos, whenever they finally get around to making the L. Ron Hubbard biopic, the only human capable of portraying him is Rooney.

Did you guys catch that? Only 0.01% of the population give a shit about this. Couldn't they have used this money to feed the homeless or clothe children in poverty or something?

What a waste of money--I agree with Rabbit--they need to start paying taxes if they have so much money they are wasting it on the world's biggest cross or some such nonsense.

Who exactly is it that needs to start paying taxes? Who exactly is it that wants to build this thing?

"The Church"? Who is that? The Catholic Church? The Church of Christ? The Southern Baptist Church? Who?

1000 / (10,000,000 / 365) = 0.0365% of the population. still pitiful, but not quite AS pitiful. :)

I didn't read the article, but these things are typically some rich bastard wanting to make some ridiculous thing not some actual church having fundraisers/ "building fund offerings" for a gigantic cross. Does the article or source mention who exactly it is that is funding this...thing?

This is my point. This whole thing has been dreamed up by the "Nazareth Cross Foundation". Who is that exactly? Where are they based? Are they even a tax exempt organization?

There seems to be a notion here that there's is some all-encompassing "Church" that is somehow responsible for all things remotely Christian-related. I'm just trying to get someone to explain this concept to me.

By "the church" it isn't meant to be an encompassing holy bufu fest. I'm talking about mega churches which build humongous auditoriums (yes, auditoriums), and are tax exempt. For instance, there is a Baptist church up the road from where I went to college. The place was huge. Bigger than any campus building for sure. No problem, whatever. I happened to know one of the parishioners, and tagged along for a AYCE night. The place was outrageous. Top of line everything. The place had better audio set up than most clubs. This is what I'm talking about. There's no sin in being rich, or even building/spending on the church, but when they are pumping that much into a single cause, and not giving back to the community--that's when the tax exempt status should end.

People like Benny Hinn (sp?), and the such. I wonder what the tax info on EWTN is?

Like I said in an earlier post, I have nothing against faith. I just think it can be sometimes used to a bad outcome.

My God, that picture speaks volumes.

And Bob, I gotta be honest here. I'm a little unsettled by your extensive at-the-ready trove of Sen./ATL Krew pics.
Pete Townsend thinks that's suspect.

I agree with you in principle, Matt, but how does top-of-the-line facilities and A/V equipment equate to not giving back to the community?

Hate to burst your bubble, but its shadows. (It was mid winter, so, no reason be sweating THAT much)

I wish I could help you man. After reading your post I looked at that site again and everything on there is completely vague. I discern that they're talking about Nazareth, Israel but it never mentions a site where this will be built nor does it mention where this "foundation" is located or where the money goes. For all we know, this could just be some entity in Tennessee that merely WANTS to build this. Also, I have no idea about tax exemptions work in Israel.

I did read this:

Quote:
15-20% of the proceeds will target accredited Christian and communal institutions with a particular focus on Nazareth’s living future –the education of its children and young people. 40% will be advanced towards micro-business loans to promote women-owned businesses, small enterprise and tourism. By your participation, you have an opportunity to further strengthen the city of Nazareth and its people.

The whole enterprise is just weird and I can't believe I looked into it as much as I did.
