is it possible with an ipod to just pop a disc into yr computer/laptop/whatever and drag it directly onto yr ipod without having to load it into itunes?

i've got an ibook with a decent amount of diskspace, but i dont want to clutter it up with tons of albums b/c i've got all my school stuff on it.

and i've had computers crash on me before as a result of having tons and tons of music files on there.

i dont have one of these little gadgets yet, but it's being considered, as i recently discovered that cdr's have a half-life that's much shorter than what i expected it to be.

Nope. I'm pretty sure you have to d/l it onto your harddrive in order to transfer to the Pod. I'd recommend picking up an external harddrive for your music files. I recently added 120 GB of external hd space for less than $100.

No, you have to rip it to itunes. I basically do that, then delete it from my harddrive...you can get programs like podwroks that will allow you to pull styff back for burning/sharing.

Oh, and an FYI, if you ever buy anything from the itunes store, the files can only be accessed on 5 cpus...

To do the same thing with iTunes, just right-click on your ipod in itunes' "source" panel and click "ipod options." Check "Manually manage songs and playlists." Now only the songs that you transfer from your computer will go on your iPod, and they won't disappear when you delete them from your computer. Booooiiiii.

Is there a program where I can hook up my ipod to my laptop and just manage playlists, songs, etc from it all day instead of my computer?

I think you can do that with EphPod, but I'm not sure.

Yes, you can do it with a laptop. I'm rockin' a 200GB Maxtor One-Touch right now, and everyone on Clever Cactus is also rockin' my 200GB Maxtor One-Touch.

FT's Simple Solution:

1. Burn iTunes files to Audio CD.
2. Rip freshly-burned CD back to hard drive as VBR MP3s.
3. Enjoy VBR MP3s without any such 5-CPU access restrictions.
4. Lather.
5. Rinse.
6. Repeat.
