I have not, but I've heard nothing but good things and the trailer entertained me.

I hadn't heard the first thing about it, and today I was playing on metacritic and it has a 94 which is hard to believe.

It hasn't come to Utah yet, but I'm really looking forward to this one. I've loved all of Alexander Payne's films.

Got comp tickets to a preview screening this week. It should be good. I'll report back.

i just saw a commercial for this movie. eh, i can't say i was amazed, but paul giamatti seems to be a guarantee. and i think dandy warhols' "everyday should be a holiday" was the music underneath.

I've not seen it yet, and i do think it looks good, but every reviewer seems to feel the need to mention that Alexander Payne wrote and directed Election and About Schmidt, two movie I find about as "meh" as you can get. So unless he's breaking new ground, I'm not sure I will see this. I do like the two lead actors, though. So I guess I'm where I should be: open to seeing this/skeptical about its instant canonization.

It was only in 4 theaters this past weekend, so...uhh...no.

Made $207,042, though.

I believe it comes to Portland this upcoming weekend. So I will see it after class sometime the week after.

Saw this last night and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's similar to About Schmidt (which I didn't like much btw) in the sense that it's another low-key character piece that pretty much leaves its main characters exactly where we found them - but this time out Payne's characters are more original (and probably closer to what he knows - he seemed totally out of his depth with the 65+ year old Schmidt) and a whole lot more fun.

Giamatti is spot on, as usual. And Thomas Haden Church is perfectly cast, playing a once semi-successful TV actor (it's not that long ago he was a regular on the abysmal Wings sitcom, so he sorta is that character).

I know it's getting great reviews but I have no interest in the crises of yuppies. that said, I will probably see it because I see everything anyway.

and election roxx
(note: re: About Schmidt: nothing is more uncomfortable than a nude scene with Kathy Bates when you go to the movies alone with your father-in-law-to-be)

It was good. I'd compare it to Swingers.

I absolutely love this movie. I saw it for the second time today with my wife, who also loved it. I think Payne hits every note perfectly. Giamatti and Church are perfectly cast in the lead roles---Giamatti continues to impress. Sideways is probably my favorite of Payne's movies, with Election a close 2nd. I agree with Radcliffe regarding About Schmidt---definitely a few cuts below. I did like Citizen Ruth, though.

I think Payne has overtaken John Sayles as my favorite active American director.

I don't know - my grandmother took me with her to see "The Piano" with her when that was new. I don't think you can beat the uncomfortability of sitting next to grandma while there's a full-frontal Harvey Keitel on the screen in front of you...

Overall, a better film than Swingers imo, but I don't think I'd compare the two. It's quite funny, though---both excellent movies, but different. Just see it, and judge for yourself.

I saw it a couple of weeks ago and really enjoyed it. It can be a bit depressing at times but it's damn funny as well (esp the line about the Merlot). I'm planning on seeing it again with my GF soon.

You may have seen it already or decided not to see it, but I think its in a totally different direction than Election and About Schmidt (which I think are in different directions themselves). I wouldn't call it groundbreaking, but it is extremely well acted and has some great dialogue and very memorable scenes. A very enjoyable movie.

In a way, it is comparable to Swingers in that Jack is to Trent as Miles is to Mike. Just 10-15 years older.

On a sidenote, I saw it in a theater that was:
a) half filled, which I was surprised at
2) the majority of the audience there was at least in their 40's or 50's, if not older

This is a great movie... Giamatti is awesome and, for that matter, so is Haden Church. A perfect mix of guilty laughs and uncomfortable embarassment.

I thought it was supposed to be a comedy. I laughed twice for a total of about 2 seconds. I just didn't enjoy it at all. Maybe I just don't have what it takes to "get it."

i can't believe that people are really excited about church's performance. if there were any scenes wiithout music in them i think that the thickness to which he lays it on would be much more apparent.
