I think this Jesus definitely could take on that cross in Nazareth:

looks like he's stuck in quicksand.

There's no sin in being rich, or even building/spending on the church, but when they are pumping that much into a single cause, and not giving back to the community--that's when the tax exempt status should end.

I agree with you in principle, Matt, but how does top-of-the-line facilities and A/V equipment equate to not giving back to the community?

Basically, its a very closed off place. In fact, I was even questioned about my being there (as an outsider). They are very closed-door, people. Giving back to the community in my mind is allowing groups, other than the church, to come in and make use of equipment (under proper supervision, of course). Or, even donating money back to the community, or how about holding retreats that are geared to teens that are open to the public. A lot of churches also allow scout troops to meet there as well.

This one is closed door. Pretty much, if you don't know someone yr not welcome.

And I get what yr saying as well, at least I think I get what yr hinting at--that the church provides spiritual guidance to those who worship there who, are in turn, members of said community.

That's a part of it, but my focus was more on the financial side since we were discussing tax exemption. I thought you were implying that churches couldn't make enough money through donations to have that kind of equipment and still donate a substantial revenue to other community programs. A lot of these churches can afford both since their congregations are not only well-off but also frequent tithers. One could argue that if they are asking for 10% of their congregants' revenue that they should forward 10% of that to other unaffiliated groups.

I agree about community involvement and participation, and I can see how the church's exclusivity might not be in integrity with the message. In that sense, it's more of a private club than a standard church.

All that said...

Just put up this one in New Castle, Delaware. Not as big as some of the others posted here (33 feet tall) but it really stands out. Plus they put it next to a very busy 8 lane highway (I-295 just past the Delaware Memorial Bridge). Me thinks that someday it will cause more then a few fender benders.

I passed a similar statue of Mary (I think) on the bike yesterday in rural central Mass. I had to get home, so I didn't turn around.

I guess it's a good way to build a 200X scale Jesus without having to pay for the whole thing.
