I forget who does this, but someone has a song called "John Coltrane's My Favorite Things"...(wanders off, looks it up, filters through tens of hits on John Coltrane's "My Favorite Things")...ah, here it is, Consonant.

the White Stripes - Cannon

my all-time favorite of theirs. they just stop in the middle, and do a little bit of Son House's "John the Revalator," then continue back on with the heaviness.

I'm pretty sure that between the two of them, "Sweet Soul Music" and "Rock-N-Roll Heaven" reference every song ever recorded.

yeah.
Yeah!
YEAH!!!

Manfred Mann's Earth Band's "Lies (Through the 80's)" refers to The Who's "My Generation".

I was also going to mention Sparks, but they're in billy g's link.

But no, I will mention it, because it's such a great song: Sparks, "When do I get to sing, 'My Way'?"

Garbage, "Push It" references the Beach Boys' "Don't Worry Baby"
Their "Special" references the Pretenders' "Talk of the Town"
One of their songs, but I forget which one, references "Achy Breaky Heart".

Bobby Bare Jr's "Dig Down" fits the bill here.

Well, technically, Oasis' "Hello" references The Stones' "Sweet Virginia":

"So wipe the shit from your shoes"

But I don't know if that counts or not?

Also "Morning Glory" refers "Tomorrow Never Knows" (Beatles)

What's the song where they say "to wallow in the mire" -- Doors reference?

David Allen Coe -- Willie and Waylon and Me references the stones, beatles, etc... can't think of a specific song, though. Maybe if I LISTENED to it, it would be more apparent?

The Beastie Boys' "Johnny Ryall" - "Blue Suede Shoes" and "Maggie's Farm"

Actually, this site breaks down all the samples and references on Paul's Boutique of which there are many.

Doesn't that song reference "98 Tears" and "99 Luftbaloons" and "Seven Chinese Brothers" and a whole bunch of other numerically-themed songs by simply adding a single number to each?

dios - now dios (Malos) - references a Beach Boys melody on "Fifty Cents" (I believe that's the song) from their debut. Same hometown and all.
