The thing that I don't mind about "indie" music in commercials is that no one knows what the hell it is from. Most of the mindless masses have no clue and pay no attention, IMO.

that is absolutely untrue. people do pay attention to music in commercials. this is why matt hales and countless other musicians have a career instead of making music evenings and weekends outside of their day job. good and/or catchy music, no matter what forum it's in, always gets recognized.

And to prove my point. Who is Matt Hales?

he's aqualung. he sure wouldn't be selling out 1000-capacity venues without the aid of "strange and beautiful" in a vw ad. that wasn't the best example, but you get the point.

Haha. Man. I must be completely out of touch with contemporary television marketing. I have never seen any of these VW commercials that keep getting used as examples. I do know Aqualung, just not by Matt Hales.

I just saw a new (to me at least) one using "You Are My Face" that was pretty funny.

I've been listening to the new Wilco quite a bit and I gotta say that it's weird that the first few moments of the first song are tagged all over with VW vibes. That feels odd.

My favorite is the one with the youngish hipster kids test-driving a VW and wanting to "rock out" on the stereo. So they bust out some ultra-hot rocking Wilco track, wild guitar solos and all, air-drumming and generally getting off like Sky Blue Sky is fucking Back in Black. It's pretty incongruous.

I don't know. How many people that you know who drive VWs are rocking out to anything besides Joan Osbourne or Jewel?

radio and tv are basically commericals interrupted by programs. it's not a jump of logic to say that anything and everything on those mediums are hijacked to at least a small degree by commercial interests.

For those of you who are noticing these songs being played in commercials, do you use DVRs or other recording devices? The software that I use with my home-brewed DVR flags and removes the commercial blocks, so I don't see any commercials in an average day. I figured most Obner users were also DVR users with their fingers on the fast-forward button.
