Current NP. So far, so good. Don't know much Gang of Four, so I can't comment on the comparison.

Everybody's doing "angular" Andy Gill guitar now. Might as well just accept it, I guess.

So far none of these bands have managed to kill Entertainment! for me, but I'm still kinda worried that a few more years of this stuff might just do it. Of course, I don't have to listen to Bloc Party et al, and for the most part, I haven't. Just enough to know what they sound like.

I certainly don't mind them. Their album is enjoyable and all, and I can kinda see both sides of the potential argument. Deriding bands for being derivative is silly, but recycling old styles with very little alteration is also pretty tiresome.

i still think that radio 4's gotham record was a bigger ripoff of gang of 4 than anything that i've heard since. i still like that record though.

I respect Gang of Four more than I like them. The greatest band to ever be influenced by them was Fugazi, who of course took things to a whole new level. Stylus gave this bloc party thing an A+ today, the first since they switched form #'s to letters rating , for gods sake. I have never heard it, I thought it was a March release.

Peace

who said anything about "influence"..this is straight up stealing. Believe me, I've never been a purest when i comes to influence, i dig Radiohead and coldplay..the clash and libertines..and i'm sure a ton of others who i can't think of. But don't you think this album is crossing the line?

and for christs sake, lets have a discussion without insults...

So it sounds like Gang of Four- its still good. What line exactly are they crossing? XTC wrote about a million songs which sound just like Beatles tunes.

For all I know, you bought Entertianment and Solid Gold when they came out on vinyl, but nothing gets me more than people who discovered these bands two years ago and then take such a lofty stance on a new band that borrows from their sound.

If you want to nail someone for showing their influences and only listen to early music which influenced all of the rest, you are giong to have a fairly small record collection.

stealing? bwahahahaha....you can't be fucking serious? give some examples.

i'm a fan of both bands, and bloc party draw influence, but NOTHING is stolen from GOF.

Obner is way ahead of the curve. The backlash started before this album got an 8.9 from Pitchfork and an A+ from Stylus. I haven't given this album enough listens to make a strong opinion yet, but I've liked what I've heard. My prediction, though, is that this album will suffer the same backlash as Franz Ferdinand once it crosses over to the MTV crowd.

I listened to it again yesterday. With just about every "indie" band boring me to tears lately, I still love this album and band. (And yes I know Gang Of Four quite extensively).

I've heard a few songs and still can't decide if I like it or not.

Silent Alarm, Kaiser Chiefs' Employment and Robbers On High Street's Tree City are my three favorite albums of 2005 so far. I think the 8.9 is justified... although, you're right D, reading that review without getting a headache would be shocking.

It's not bad, but I still liken it to Gang of Four for the sorority set.

I got bored of the Chiefs :( I couldn't make it through the whole album.

I'm tellin y'all that I'm getting totally bored with most of this throwback indie stuff all the sudden.

I thought the Bloc Party review was one of their better ones. (I read it yesterday). It wasn't as long-winded as others have been.
