Hard to believe, but another NHL season is upon us, so it's time to get a fantasy league together. I can copy last year's format into another league pretty easily. Post here if you're interested.

League info to follow...

It shouldn't be so goalie-oriented this year.

My thinking behind that was that in a 10-team league, there are so many good goalies available on waivers. I thought it would be cool to make them valuable.

How about if goalie games started is a category, but I lower the weekly goalie games played limit? That way there's an incentive to play multiple goalies, but it's not a requirement. What do you think?

See, this is a problem. Your goaltender points account for HALF of total points. There aren't enough goalies in a 30 team league to justify that.

It definitely helps, but is it mandatory that there be 10 stat categories?

I think keeping the same number of skater categories and goalie categories helps ensure that the winning team is most likely to be the best balanced team. My fear is that you could load up on forwards, ignore goaltending, and still win.

No. I'll post the available categories in a sec.

I think faceoffs won and short handed points are decent categories, though short handed points are difficult to predict.

Is this too radical?

Are ties even awarded anymore?

I think this gives shutouts too much value. It would be like hitting the lottery - pretty much randomly occurring, and whenever it did happen you'd have a big advantage over your opponent.

What about:

Goals, Assists, PIMs

and

Wins, GAA, and either Games Started or Saves

?

I'm thinking "games started" might be better than "saves" - I mean, there should be some reward for picking a goaltender that actually plays regularly.

Edit: But I could be talked into "saves"

I could probably go either way, but I think I'm leaning toward "saves" b/c then you'd still get some positive credit if your guy took over in the 2nd or 3rd period. If we used "games started" you wouldn't get that positive credit- the only thing you'd likely get is a hit to your GAA.

I wish I knew more than the rules of hockey.

I actually might have a better chance at the hockey than I do at MLB and NFL since I follow those pretty regularly and end up in the basement every year.

I can't make that draft. But maybe I'll do it anyways. I came within 1 stat of winning a 16 team league last year after not partaking in the live draft. I didn't even pre-rank.

It's hockey, how can it NOT be goalie-oriented? It's not like it's football fantasy & we're giving kickers half the categories. The problem isn't the number of stats, but how hard it was to get the min games played for the stats to count. I think the rosters need to be smaller & min goalie games needs to be lowered. There's only 60 active goalies at any given time & most of the back ups on the East Coast rarely play due to there weenie travel schedule. I had a bunch of goalies go out last year & there was nothing on waivers, not nothing good, NOTHING AT ALL. Everyone was carrying 5 goalies to get that 7-6-5 games played. It didn't seem normal till we finally got it lowered to 4.

Here's how I'm doing a league I'm setting up with some friends:

goalie stats: W, L, GAA & Save %

Skater stats: Goals, Assists, PP points, GWG, PIM, +/-

C, C, LW, LW, RW, RW, D, D, D, D, Utility, G, G, 5 bench spots & 2 IR spots

40/60 seems good. Shutouts are too big a home run because it affects GAA, Save % & wins & then on top of that you give it it's own stat.

What the hell is GS?

I could go along with this.

And GS is "games started", I think.

I arbitrarily picked that day. I can move it if you want. How's the previous day? (Or is it a Pacific time thing?)

Here's why I'd rather have 3 of C, RW, and LW as opposed to 2-

in a 10-team league, there's going to be a ton of talent on the waiver wire as it is. If you use only 2 of C, LW, and RW you're going to have free agent 30 goal scorers. I'd rather have it so that if you want top talent, you have trade for it. Not available for nothing.

I care less about defensemen. If everyone would rather start 4 as opposed to 6, that's fine with me.

I can go for that. and the draft issue I have is a Tuesday-Thursday thing. Any other day I can clear time, as long as it doesn't interfer with my other live draft which I'll set up today

I'm in again. Also echoing the goaltending issue, I got royally screwed by it last season.

I'm in. Haven't done a hockey fantasy team since the horrible showing with a work one a few years back. I'm ready to jump on the horse again.
