I recently installed a TV tuner in my computer, and would now like to watch/record cable channels on my PC. I'm currently using a 2 Ghz splitter and 1 Ghz coaxial cable running from the cable source directly to the tuner. The "free" channels (CBS, NBC, Fox, etc) come in just fine, but I don't get any of the other channels that are available through the actual cable box (Spike, Discovery, etc). Is is possible to receive the additional channels without the aid of a cable box, or is that necessary to decode the other channels?

You need another cable box.

Do you have a box? (like for your TV now?) Because on my comcast I can get the first 78 channels without a box. Everything after that is "digital"

*Quick rant: I only pay for digital cable for MSNBC and HBO

On Demand? My ass; hows about I pay for the channels I fucking want*

that's what I'm thinkin too Haq; Unless they make a downloadable cable-box code plug-in; you need a box

I do have a box, but it's in the family room while my computer is in my bedroom.

Thanks for the help, folks. I guess I can live with digital cable in one room for now. I refuse to give Comcast any more money. RCN, the main competition in the area, is not available in my neighborhood. That's what I get for living in this podunk place called "Chicago."

Is there a specific cable setting in the TV card software like there is on a TV?

I know mike; I'm thinking about adding a TV in my home office and I can't decide whether its worth it to get another box. The thing is, to , in the morning I can't watch Imus in bed with my coffee; have to drag my ass out to the living room.

There seem to be just two basic settings - "TV" and "cable." When it attempts to find all channels available, only the "regular" TV channels show up while the rest are static. I'll explore the tuner a little more, but it's not looking/sounding promising.

Yeah...I can't really justify getting a second box just for my computer. Making digital copies of cable shows without dropping $200 for a stand-alone DVD recorder would be nice, though.
