I like this very much. It took a few listens to like it, though.

Interesting tidbits on "A Hand To Take Hold Of The Scene"

Okkervil River Wrote:
I'm the band in a show bout a man holding hands with his wife
On a therapist couch with his face to the crowd, always fucking around countless nights
And there's this one episode, close-up cameras were showing him crying
His red head and his red eyes

apparently has to do with the time they played "Black" on Breaking Bonaduce

Okkervil River Wrote:
I'm the band in a show bout a boy being buried alive
From his head to his toes by a criminal but with a sensitive soul with a set of raccoon eyes
And there's this scene in the show when a hustler knows he's gonna die
The ground opens and he climbs inside

"It Ends With A Fall(?)" was played during Cold Case Files, Im guessing the above references the episode. Makes me wanna watch that abomination of a show now.

It's pretty much this by itself and then everything else this year for me.

Very good, cracked my top 5 of the year after one listen. I don't like it as well as Black Sheep Boy but that was my favorite album of 2005 so I have to lower my expectations a bit.

I really think this might be their best album, all told. It hasn't faded for me a bit. That said, Savannah Smiles is maybe my only consistent skipper in the entire oeuvre. emusic fans should grab the emusic-only 10th track, it's pretty good.

no "red" or "it ends with a fall" which was pretty sad. i love both of those songs.

set (one hour, 24 minutes):

plus ones
lady liberty
no key, no plan
all the latest toughs
(TSN)
song of our so called friend
(DTROGD)
unless it's kicks
(DTROGD)
black sheep boy
our life is not a movie
(BSB)
john allen smyth (sloop john b song)
-----
encore
okkervil river song*
war criminals
(BSB)
(DFILWEYS)

parentheses indicates that I don't know the name of the song, but I know what album it came from. I'll fill them in later.

So, I saw them at Logan Square Auditorium and it holds something like 800 people (correct me if i'm wrong, z). The room has a really high ceiling, so the sound is kind of echo-y and hollow. The band was really tight, though, and they busted out an accordian and trumpet for a lot of songs, so I was happy. The crowd was pretty decent, only one a-hole girl got shitfaced and was being obnoxious, but her friends kept her under control as much as they could.

Good show, but definitely not the same as seeing them in 200 capacity Schubas, that's for sure.

*seeing the band perform Okkervil River Song brought me back to seeing Colin's band when they were in town for Phil & Deena's wedding. I love that they all stand together and sing at the end of the song. So warm and fuzzy.

Saw them on Wednesday for the first time and was absolutely impressed. Great show. It made me upset that I missed them last year at a much smaller place. Still, though, the Pearl Street venue isn't huge.

Rain started to fall as Will was doing a solo version of 'A Stone'. Nice night.

I don't know song names, so I stole this set list from a fan. I also found a copy of it if anyone is interested.

King and Queen’s Song
It ends with a fall
A hand to take hold of the scene
No keys, no plan
All the latest toughs
Girl in port
Plus ones
You can’t hold the hand of a rock and roll man
Unless it’s kicks
Black
Red
Our life is a movie or maybe segways into
For Real
Westfall

Break

A Stone
O Dana
John Allyn Smith Sails
Last love song for now

saw them a month or so ago here. Good show.

I;ve got the same beef with them as I do with Old 97's/ Rhett Miller. That lead singer is so f-ing into himself. Didn't expect so much hair flipping et al.

But it sounded great and they played a HUGE set. I think they were making up for their last San Diego show (that they canceled) back in 2005 w/ Band of Horses (who played and rocked).
