From their site:

Hello everyone.
As many of you know, our new record, The Woods, comes out on May 24th. While there is really nothing we can do to stop people from leaking/downloading promo copies of 'The Woods' on the Internet, we want to say that we don't support this action and we want to address it directly, and hopefully, preemptively.

It seems important for you to know how we feel about it.

The people we are most excited to have hear this record are our friends and you, our fans, the people who have supported us and who are eager to hear our new ideas. We feel as impatient for this new music to get out into the world as we're sure some of you do.

Our latest record is something that we have worked on for a long time. The writing took nearly two years in an effort to challenge and push ourselves. And the recording/mixing itself took six weeks. So much of this new record is a response to the deadening and watering down of music. We wanted to make something that felt wild and alive and that made us excited to wake up in the mornings. There is art work and lyrics and images that we want to share. Ideally, we want to present this record in the way we envision it; as a complete entity, flowing and tangible and within the context that we have created for it. Part of that context is the community that we come from, and this community includes you. And we have some of the best fans: you are smart and critical and outspoken, and we're proud to feel a connection with you.

We know that most people who download indie songs/albums for free find other ways of supporting the bands they love. And we acknowledge that it is a new era and that many people discover music through file sharing. We feel lucky to be a band that has grown organically over the years and we realize that technology has changed the entire process of growth and awareness of music. (We love, for instance, that bootlegs of our live shows are traded on the Internet.) It's scary to imagine that this leak might actually affect our livelihoods, but ultimately this isn't about the fear of people not supporting us financially as indie artists. We don't think of 'The Woods' as some product getting out there early, we think of it as our art and lives and dreams. For us it's about respect and about people supporting us by being aware of our artistic intent. We ask that you please respect our wishes to present this record the way we intended. We're certain that you would want the same for your own endeavors, artistic or otherwise.

So much of what this record is about sacrificing everything to feeling, it's about experience and living and being in the present tense. There will be so many things to experience between now and May 24th; so many other records to sit with and live through, as well as films, books, friends, conversations, etc.

The most honest thing we can say is that it breaks our hearts to think of this being out there early. It actually just feels awful. The release date is 3 months away. We have worked for so long on this record. It's not real for us until May 24th; that is the moment when we get to share this piece of our lives that we are so proud of, to share it with you the way we intended; please wait until then to share it with us.

If you have put this record up on the Internet, please take it down now.

Thank you,
Corin, Carrie, and Janet

Just out of curiousity, how many of you who download leaked albums actually buy them later?

I've certainly downloaded plenty of albums by indie artists, but when it's something I've really been looking forward to, I prefer to wait for the real thing. So, it seems weird to me to download Gimme Fiction, for example, because I know I'm going to want to buy it when it comes out anyway.

Of the leaked albums that I download, I but ALL of the ones that I enjoy (this is usually a very small percentage, so my wallet doesn't take too much of a hit). If it ends up on my "to buy" list, it gets deleted after 2-3 listens so I don't suffer any burnout. "Bad" albums get deleted after 1 listen or less.

I'm not scared of the RIAA. I'm just scared of shitty-sounding MP3s that will NEVER take the place of the real thing for me.

I also usually resist the temptation to download releases I'm looking forward to hearing - much like s-k's argument, I like to take an album as a whole piece of art, artwork, packaging and unfortunate filler as a whole. I have much less qualms about downloading whole albums from artists I've never heard before. Maybe because I've been tricked too many times into buying a crummy album through marketing or hype.

S-k's point would carry more weight for me, however, if they also refrained from releasing any singles from their albums prior to official release, and kept reviewers, DJs, and others who have the ability to pre-affect opinions from hearing the completed album prior to release. If access to their album prior to the official unveiling is truly so troublesome to them wouldn't they also be worried about these types of things?

The internet and file sharing is the new radio - It allows people the opportunity to listen before they buy, and to form an opinion unswayed by marketing within their own home, in a manner that is most comfortable to them. The RIAA is not worried about not selling artwork - they are afraid that the 90% filler that they have been padding most popular releases with is no longer going to pay the bills. True artists like s-k and others who consistently generate new, interesting music will never stop generating a livelihood from their art. Rather, it is the now-obsolete layers of record execs who will need to find other ways to leech off the system.

I'm pretty sure of all of that...

To answer the previous question, I had most of the LCD on my hard drive or owned it on record through traditional means (all the released singles, including "movement") and I still ponied up $15+tax to buy it tonight. I have 4 songs off of the Bloc Party album, but will end up buying it as well. I'd do the same with Spoon, S-K, Quasimoto, or any other artist who put out an album that I really liked, or that I'd already started collecting albums from...
I'm just a bit impatient and, although I won't actually go on any file trading sites due to moral issues and MAC incompadibility with the "cooler" sites, I have no problem getting stuff from a YSI link. Heck, I probably wouldn't be looking forward to buying the Caribou and Prefuse albums as much if it weren't for Dalen and everyone else putting them up here...

I'm way to impatient to wait, so i listen to the advance copies, and then decide. if i dig it, i buy it. if not, it get's trashed almost immediately.

S-K must've not wanted this to leak because it was all a joke and the real LP is coming out in May??? I heard it twice and the second time was torture. I can feel my ipod seething at me because I left it on there this morning.
