A question for all you folks who have actual musician myspace accounts.

I ran into a guy at the pub today. He was passing around a set of headphones, bragging up his new recording. I eventually took my turn listening, and it was as horrid as I'd expected. He said he'd paid $300 to the studio to record it, some local schmuck with a cheap-ass setup in his basement. I congratulated him.

I've known this guy for a long time - he's sort of a legend around town. Tone deaf and desperate. Lives the punk lifestyle, and has all the prerequisite tattoos to prove it. Shows up at every open mic in town and monopolizes the stage until he is forcefully removed. Usually, this kind of joker would get mercilessly ridiculed around here until he quit showing up, and disappeared into the drunken background noise of the night. Ricardo is different, though. For one thing, he is always quiet and courteous, and never gets angry or violent, no matter how much shit he's dealt. Also, he works during the week as bouncer/doorman at one of the nicest bars in town, and unfailingly remembers and rewards a nice comment or polite, hesitant applause with generosity at the door. So he gets a pass from most people. Including me.

Ricardo knows I'm good with computers, and tells me he wants to upload this track to his myspace account. He pops his CD out of his player, the name of the song scrawled in sharpie on the CD-R by the gimcrack recording studio he's dealing with: "I Feel Pain Tonight." His problem, he explains, is he can't figure out how to load it onto his myspace page. Says the file is too big. He buys me another beer as we chat. Oh shit, I'm obligated now. I offer to rip his CD into mp3 so he can embarrass himself in front of a more global audience. He nods once, his faux-cool attitude returning. He hands over his CD, the pitiful, puny fruit of his pubescent recording career. I pledge to return it to him tomorrow.

Basically, it's just a one track CD. I need to rip it to MP3, and burn him a second CD with the track in mp3 file mode... My question for you, if you've bothered to read through this entire sad story, is: Are there any filesize limits or bitrate limits on Myspace? Would VBR 256 kbps be ok?

Thanks, _Mutty

I guess use whatever music program - itunes, winamp, whatever, and rip it at maybe 128 if not less. That shit is supposed to stream and sound terrible anyway; it's not a time to be fussy with bitrates. It's not like this guy is going to know the difference.

Hey, at least he's out doing it. Who cares if it sounds like shit. Not to get all hippie on you, but his juices are flowing.

Trust me, for every great band on myspace, there are millions other horrid ones out there. Did you know there's a guy who does strictly Springsteen covers on a uke? Yeah. Crazy. Might sound stupid, but he's doing it. /rant
