if i were to say to you 'next sunday' today, would that mean the very next sunday, or a week from this coming sunday? i am very confused.

in this country, probably just the very next Sunday. cos that's generally when our "week" starts.

I would assume you meant the next Sunday that appears on the calendar. Thus, this coming weekend.

dammit I take that back. that's probably technically how it would be, but I think most people take the very next Sunday to be "this Sunday."

Though I realize it is inaccurate, when someone says "next Sunday," I think they mean the one AFTER "this Sunday," which is the one coming up in a few days.

"This Sunday" = Feb. 20

"Next Sunday" = Feb. 27

Though if it were Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday, I would ask for confirmation. I prefer to say "Sunday the 27th" if its important and leave the colloquialisms at home.

yes, "next sunday" would be the sunday after the forthcoming weekend, but i agree that it's best to ask for confirmation. this is why i usually make arrangements by dates.

Well, even if it's on a monday, and you say.. 'let's do something sunday', obviously it doesnt mean, the day before...so it means the first coming sunday in 6 days.....

same situation....lets do something 'next sunday', id assumme it was the 27th as well.... cause it wouldnt be 'this sunday' or 'this coming sunday'

I agree with this.

When talking about the 27th, I would say "Sunday Next," which is just something my family has always said.

'round these here parts, the 20th would be Next Sunday and the 27th would be "Sunday Week".

To me, "Next Sunday" means the one coming up. To be more specific, 20 February, 2005.

Today is February 16.

This Sunday = February 20
Next Sunday = February 27

That's how I see it.

"(this) coming Sunday" = 20 February

"Sunday after next" = 27 February

Monday Afternoon: "Hey, what are you doing this Sunday?" (obviosuly means the Sunday coming up in 6 days)

Monday Afternoon: "Hey What are you doing Next Sunday?" (the Sunday following the coming Sunday in 13 days)

<-repeat.

To me, this sunday would be the most proximal sunday that hasn't happened yet.

Next sunday could be either this sunday, or the sunday after next.

I usually say, this coming sunday, or the sunday after next, just to avoid confusion.
