I really, really, really like that Action Figure Party album, but don't know whether it was just a one-off or not.

japancakes (though, i haven't heard everything of theirs, but i think it's all instrumental)

yep, it is. John Neff! should be the new Mike Jones!

Besides those mentioned, I also enjoy Rumah Sakit, Oma Yang, Boards of Canada, Tarantel, Rome, Fridge, (Early) Trans Am,

I have been thinking of checking out Trans Am for awhile now, any particular albums I should check out first?

Surrender to the Night is my favorite of theirs...
anything past You Can Always Get What You Want is suspect, and You Can is a B-Sidesish/outtakes compilation in itself...

Many good ones already mentioned (including Don Cab--which is the top of the instrumental mountain--and American Don is clearly their best).

some others:

Ganger--Hammock Style is amazing.

Kinski--awesome, almost ambient in places, but definitely rock. and heavy.

Pele--a bit more jazz-rock than the others. perhaps a faster moving Tortoise? great stuff.

Mogwai - Come On Die Young is their best record.
Not a true statement.

"clearly" in what twisted, alternate universe?

I've actually never heard all of What Burns..., but of the stuff I do know, their first two records (as is the usual consensus) are easily my favorites. American Don was actually the first thing of theirs I ever heard, and it's my least favorite.

well, someone mentioned vandermark. So i'd say instrumental is instrumental.

So I'll add Kronos Quartet for their forward thinking in classical music and beyond.

And Hot Buttered Rhythm, cause they're funky.

Do Make Say Think - Not a great band but very interesting.

I'm confused. Why not a great band? They absolutely blew me away live, last time I saw them. Winter Hymn ... is incredible. If they're not yet great, they will be soon.

The only I can think to add right now is Jaga (Jazzist).

I heard only their latest record.
I liked it but it did'nt impress me the way other bands have (instrumental).
I think they would be a very good live band and would check them out if they are ever near me, however.
