I have no suggestions right now, I'm just a willin participant. I also know and accept the consequence of my silence which is I will not bitch about anything as the season goes on.

ops is does not actually overlap with avg. given how many teams are focused on ops for talen evaluation, there are many more players in the league now similar to mark bellhorn, who strikes out a ton, but is a massive offensive weapon for my beloved sox. also, a player like barry bonds is not giving a fantasy team the full benefit of his offense without taking that obp into consideration.

further, if two hitters go 4-4 one day, one with all doubles and one with all singles, clearly the superior performer should be recognized.

lastly, ops is nice because it is an average, which levels the playing field for stats, rather than just calculating total walks or total bases. one clean stat that tells a far different story than avg.

I agree. OPS should definitely be a category. If we have a 5X5 league, OPS could take the place of SLG and OBP, and still have room for AVG., HR, RBI, SB, or what have you.

If you used both OPS and HR, you'd be indirectly double counting HR. That's because OPS is OPB + SLG%. SLG% is a measure of extra base hits, which is HRs. Using both OPS and HR is a bad idea- HR hitters would become even more valuable and base stealers's value would be significantly lessened.

And in the same way (although somewhat less), OPS indirectly accounts for batting average via measuring OBP. OBP is hits+walks over plate appearances.

So what you're saying is that if we include OPS, the other categories would be RUNS, SB, RBI, and OBP? So no BB, HITS or AVG (OBP will cover) or HR (OPS will cover). I'm okay with that if that's the case.

No, OPS includes OBP. (OPS is OBP plus SLG%) If we used OPS (and wanted to avoid double counting- a good thing to do if possible), we could use R, RBI, and SBs.

OPS is a cool stat, but it accounts for too much, imo. Plus, if we wanted to keep the league simple, as someone has suggested, it probably isn't a wise choice. Personally, (and I know I'm abusing my suggestion privileges here ) I think using either AVG or OBP, along with SLG or HR, is better.

FYI, yahoo has opened their fantasy baseball service. It might be a good idea to get a league so we can get a good draft time. We can iron out the particulars later. OPA? Or I can just do it myself, let me know.

Is it too late for the reigning champ to be in?

I like how it's been set up the last 3-4 years.

My impression was OPA was defacto-commish, unless somebody else wanted it. A bunch of people offerred to do it, but nothing was settled.

I vote we play for CDs.

I think everyone can pony up for a CD in October. But if we do that then we should have a minimum number of posts to play. Otherwise we may never hear from these people again.

it was agreed last year that we would each buy a cd for the winner. i wouldn't mind that again this year, but i also plan to win.

I'm the same way...though I don't buy the wierd category suggestions Nacho is suggesting...

no HR? No AVG? Just OBP & SLG?
Someone's been reading too much "Moneyball" lately...

I agree. Stick with the basics.

Same here - I only suggested OBP (instead of doing walks/strikeouts an individual categories, and to balance out putting "holds" on the menu so that a whole class of reliever is not forgotten)...Other than that, I like my Fantasy in the ordinary Yahooian missionary position, if you catch my drift...

I only said we shouldn't use HR or AVG if we're gonna use OPS. Personally, I'd rather use Avg & Hr, along with the other standard categories (runs, rbi, sbs, w, s, ks, era, whip).

If we add holds as a 6th pitching category, we should probably add a 6th hitting category. OBP might be the best one to add.

Yeah, I'm not up for that. Nor was I last year, which is why I didn't send a CD. Especially because it was decided after the league started. Also because I got fucked.

Anyway, if buying a CD is mandatory I'll bail. It's not really that I'm cheap, I just don't want to be bothered.

I think you're under the one hundred post minimum, per Pagoda's suggestion, anyway.

As it stands, I finally came thru with a Cd compensation for one of these competitions. Digital Hardcore Jericho, I hope you still enjoy Les Savy Fav.

Oh, yes, and Bloor: the mix is being prepped (the one I owe for the Falcs spanking my Rams.)

That's the only problem with getting 11 new albums in about a week is you don't focus on every album. I've probably listened to the Inches album twice. I need to revisit.

If there's a 100-post minimum, I would be left out, which is ridiculous. I've been involved with these fantasy leagues for 3 years now, and have stayed active with my team every time and bought and sent CD's when I didn't win.

I just won one of the fantasy football leagues, so does that get me an automatic bid to be in the baseball league?

Let's just get this party started.

OK, I've gone ahead and created the leagues since nobody else did. I made every effort to take all your suggestions in creating these leagues. There's gonna be two leagues of 10 teams each with 25 man rosters. The leagues are identical in every way except for live draft time and date. Join the league that best fits your schedule.

As far as the prize, if there's one person who objects to the CD prize, that's one too many. To make it covenient to all, we can make the prize a mix CD instead. We can discuss this further in this thread.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask in this thread or PM me.
