Maryland got swept by State last night in basketball. Sorry e-stone, spizzle trunk, ayah, possibly others.

We still have an outside shot of getting into the NCAA tournament, seeing as how we have 3 of our final 4 ACC games at home, albeit with two of them against Wake and UNC. I'd say if we finish 7-9 means it means we are a bubble team, 8-8 we are in, 9-7 definitely in. We'd also have to win a game or two in the ACC Tourney to help our cause.

Joe Lunardi seems to think UMd is a lock for the tournament after beating Dook. Wonder if last night's loss against us makes a difference.

Tech is looking shaky as well after getting swept by us at home on Sunday. Miami is supposedly on the bubble.

ILIAN EVTIMOV!

thanks man. i was waiting for this.

what was up with that rainstorm of 3-pointers last night???? i mean, come on!

as far as maryland, this is their losing week...next week will be winning week again. 3 weeks ago, we beat dook and GT. 2 weeks ago we lose to clemson and miami. last week we beat VT and dook. this week we lost to NC state, and (God forbid) UVA. but all is good, because by this theory, we should beat UNC next sunday! and i will be at that game in college park -- gotta remember to bring my riot gear.

it's tough living in the ACC. we all beat up on each other all season long, and then our records don't look so great by tourney time. i still think the top 7 teams in the ACC could beat almost all of the top 25 right now.

which is why i wish illinois could play more teams of this caliber throughout the season. they are playing so well as a team this year it's spooky but it's no acc schedule.

Ha, but State lost to UVA. And State swept Maryland. We also lost to Miami, Va Tech, FSU. OH HOW WACKY THE ACC IS.

As far as the 3-pointers, we did the same thing to you last game. We were like 10-12 in the first half when we got out to the 26 pt halftime lead. I dunno, something about Maryland brings out the shooters in us. We can be good shooting the 3, like we were last night, or it can be redamndiculous because we are missing but keep shooting regardless.

good job to your team Fudge. I was really pulling for them and I'm glad they got the W. Probably one of my 3-4 favorite college teams outside of OK. Congrats to you all.

Nice! You guys put the hurt on Nebraska last night, no? At least by halftime it was pretty bad. Then I finished the State game.

The only thing about winning some is that Herb Sendek stays another year. I think I am pretty fed up with him. Hewitt took Tech to the Final Four in his 4th year. Prosser has Wake a nationally-visible program in his 3rd or 4th. Roy Williams has UNC playing well. In Herb's 9th year, he can't get us past the second round and we have only been to the tourney 3 times.

yeah, thank heavens we won. it was 83-60 final. after getting out to a 17-2 start with some amazing games, we were in a funk that stunk up the world (I mean, MIZZOU?!?!?!?) so we needed last night pretty bad.

as for NC State, it'll come man. sometimes it just gets frustrating but programs get bounces ya know--sometimes lucky ones, sometimes not so lucky. It took Sampson 7 or so yrs. to get us back on the radar. but if you guys make the tournament, I'm thinking *team I don't want us to hit*. Hodge and Co. could be pretty dangerous and surprising.

The funny thing is, I remember Sampson's job being mentioned as one of the candidates for the State job before Herb was hired. He is from Pembroke, NC, so it kind of made sense. I would have definitely liked to have him more than Herb.

Now that we have all of our team healthy, we have a chance to make a run and get in the tournament. If we have a good shooting night and play some defense, we can play with a lot of teams in the nation, especially when we are hitting the 3ball. But I guess the same could be said for most teams. Anyways, I love March.

I didn't realize Pete Gillen was still at UVa. How fucking long has he been there?

i wish my team would stop toying with us. it's getting to be ri-goddamn-diculous. gary williams was on pti the day before last night's game and acknowledged how terrible it is for the players to essentially decide which games to do well in.

Can't be that long, 'cause he was carpet-bagging it around the eastern seaboard and mideast for the last decade. Xavier for a bit, then on to his "dream job" at Providence, and now Virginia. Maybe five years, then?

i wish there was a dook fan or two on the boards here.

a dook loss is just as good as a maryland win to me.

i don't think there is a team i hate as much. maybe the ny jets.

I actually like the ACC this year due to the fact that you could legitimately pick an all-ACC first team and have no players from Duke on the squad.

Herb Sendek's situation right now is typical of the way the Rick Pitino lineage is beginning to rust. Ricky himself has become subject to Feburary flameouts at Louisville and some fans are becoming restless, Billy Donovan at Florida has a team full of wing players with glass jaws who fear even incidental contact, and Sendek has made a career at NC State of doing just enough to stay out of the broadcasting booth.

Maryland's fans are by far the most creative in college basketball IMO. The "Fuck Duke" debacle was kind of dumb, but they consistently produce when the Devils are involved. This, for example:
http://www.truthaboutduke.com/news_month.php?m=January&y=2005 - top of the page

I do think the ACC gets a bit of a hot stone massage from ESPN due to their contract. I feel like the Big East is just as good, if not better this season.

SEC has one good team (Kentucky). Big Ten has one good team (Illinois).

College Basketball is finally starting to see the effects of the 5/8 recruitng rule (which ironically was repealed last summer)and NBA jumps hit home hardcore. With the execption of Illinois (who will lose before selection sunday, mark it down), there's a ton of parity.

Nice analysis. That's pretty much spot on.
