They had this brilliant cartoon variation of "Whose on first?" with bands from Woodstock (eg The Band, The Who, etc). That was a great cartoon when I was in like 4th grade or something.

Yeah, this shit was funny a' hell.

I couldn't find a full transcription, but it went something like this:

Older Squirrel: "Who's on stage?"
Younger Squirrel: "Yes"
OS: "Yes is on stage?"
YS: "No. Yes isn't here"
OS: "Well then, who is on stage"
YS: "Yes."
OS: (a bit irritated) "SO YES IS ON STAGE!"
YS: "No, no, no. Who's on stage."

Skippy and Slappy are at Woodstock. Roger Daltrey is onstage singing…
SLAPPY: Skippy, what is the name of that group playing on stage?

SKIPPY: Who.

SLAPPY: The name of the group.

SKIPPY: Who.

SLAPPY: The group on stage.

SKIPPY: Who.

SLAPPY: The group playing on stage.

SKIPPY: Who.

SLAPPY: You're starting to sound like an owl, Skippy.

SKIPPY: Who is on stage!

SLAPPY: That is what I'm askin' ya', who is on stage?

SKIPPY: That's what I said.

SLAPPY: You said who?

SKIPPY: I sure did.

SLAPPY: So tell me the name.

SKIPPY: Who.

SLAPPY: The name of the group.

SKIPPY: Who.

SLAPPY: The group on stage.

SKIPPY: Who.

SLAPPY: The name of the band on stage!

SKIPPY: Who!

SLAPPY: You're doing that owl thing again, Skippy!

SKIPPY: I'm not, Aunt Slappy, I'm telling you Who is on stage.

SLAPPY: So tell me.

SKIPPY: Who.

SLAPPY: So tell me.

SKIPPY: Who.

SLAPPY: The name of the group.

SKIPPY: Who.

SLAPPY: The group on stage!

SKIPPY: Who!

SLAPPY: That's what I'm asking you!

SKIPPY: And I'm telling you the answer.

SLAPPY: Wait, Skippy, let's start over. Is there a band on stage?

SKIPPY: Yes.

SLAPPY: Does the band have a name?

SKIPPY: Yes.

SLAPPY: Do you know the name of the band?

SKIPPY: Yes.

SLAPPY: Then tell me the name of the band on stage.

SKIPPY: Who.

SLAPPY: The name of the band!

SKIPPY: Who.

SLAPPY: The band, playing on stage!

SKIPPY: Who.

SLAPPY: That's what I want to know!

SKIPPY: I'm telling you!

SLAPPY: Who is on stage.

SKIPPY: Yes.

SLAPPY: Who is?

SKIPPY: Yes.

SLAPPY: Oh. So the name of the band is Yes.

SKIPPY: No, Aunt Slappy, Yes is not even at this concert.

SLAPPY: Then who is on stage?

SKIPPY: Yes.

SLAPPY: Who is?

SKIPPY: Yes.

SLAPPY: That's just what I said, Yes is on stage.

SKIPPY: No, Yes is not here. Who is on stage.

SLAPPY: Whaddya askin' me for?

SKIPPY: I'm not!

SLAPPY: Wait, let's try this again. Do you see the band on stage?

SKIPPY: No I don't see The Band, that's a different group entirely.

SLAPPY: On stage, Skippy. Look, see the band?

SKIPPY: No I don't.

SLAPPY: Get rid of those John Lennon glasses and look! There, there's the band!

SKIPPY: No, that's not The Band. The Band is performing later on. Who's on stage.

SLAPPY: You tell me.

SKIPPY: Who.

SLAPPY: The name of the group on stage.

SKIPPY: Who.

SLAPPY: The name of the group!

SKIPPY: Who.

SLAPPY: The group on stage!

SKIPPY: Who.

SLAPPY: The band!

SKIPPY: No, The Band is performing later. Right now, we're listening to Who.

SLAPPY: That's what I wanna know!!

ROGER DALTRY: Hey, you squirrels are funny, man. Come on up here and take a bow.

SKIPPY: Yeah! Far out!

SLAPPY: Oh brother...

Yeah, I was about to mention the good old days of WB animation, where all the hispanic characters were lazy, all the "colored" characters were buffoons, all the asian characters were villains, and all the rural white dudes were psychopathic alcoholic wifebeaters . . . tons of those really old WB cartoons have been permanently shelved due to the non-PC nature of their content.

Sometime they should release all those ancient reels on DVD - it would definitely be cause some reevaluation of their cultural impact.

My nephew was watching Pepe Le Pew the other day and that seemed to suit him just fine for an hour.

What is even more disturbing is why update Bugs Bunny at all?

Are they limited to only using the same characters? I dont expect every cartoon I saw as a kid to be remade so today's youth can relate to it. That is the beauty of history. Laughing at what we thought of as funny. In the 1970's we were entertained by Scooby Doo, The Laugh-a-lympics, Bugs, Yosemite Sam, and all the others.

Why not make a bigger effort to create new characters. I hate the rehash mentality. It shows our weakness as a society in the arts today to be always redoing our past creative ideas.

Actually, there's a really old Bosco cartoon included as an extra feature on the Golden Collection Vol. 1 set. And really, several of the cartoons included as the main package contain some pretty blatant racial stereotypes. Aside from the Speedy Gonzalez associated characters, there's a mentally challenged Eskimo and several instances of lampooning Native Americans.

But of course you can't really pin all of that stuff on WB cartoons.

It's hard to know how to feel about it, really. I mean, the great cartoons are still great for the same reasons (most of them don't feature racial stereotypes anyway), but when that stuff pops up, it's really cringe-inducing.

While admittedly Buckwheat could be offensive to some, I've heard that many Little Rascals episodes haven't been shown in decades due to some pretty offensive stuff.

I heard the same thing about the Dukes of Hazard pre its mid-90s re-emergence.

that would be so awesome though if bill cosby had just hoarded up all the duke of hazzard episodes and sat on a giant pile of them, cackling like a nutjob.

there's actually an indie theater here in Portland (Clinton Street Theater), and the guy who owns it has a slew of the older non-politically-correct WB cartoons. He shows them every once in a while... one of the last times I was there, we saw a cartoon retrospective on racial stereotypes during WW2. It's amazing some of the stuff they got away with back then.

Never knew I was to assume Inuit are retards.

That would explain the Nunavut Sewage District's seemingly Escherite piping, though; if they're mentally, you know, not all there, you know.
