forgive if this has been discussed. anyone watch the tom petty documentary?

just watched it and am renewedly enthralled. as far as documentaries go too, i thought it was a really great mix of kickass live performances and indepth storytelling. so thumbs up, is what i'm sayin.

I heard a pretty in depth discussion of it on the radio the other day and am looking forward to seeing it.

Its long as fuck, right?

i thought it was ok. the stuff on the early albums was good, but then it kind of dragged on and on talking about the last 10 years or so.

Anyone that doesn't like Tom Petty just plain doesn't like Rock N' Roll. Seriously.

When I think of RNR one of the very first people I think of is him.

And I will be asking for this for Xmas for sure.

Oh totally. But the other half is some of the better stuff in pop/mainstream American rock of the past 30 years.

I watched the doc last week and thought it lost most of its momentum when it got to Wildflowers, which is just about right. The fly-on-the-wall treatment of the Wilburys stuff and especially the Roger McGuinn session was every bit as awesome as I'd hoped. I was a bit flustered by the way they handled the recollections of dealing with Lynch's departure and Howie Epstein's death. But, as per usual, Bogdanovich always comes to praise his heroes, never to bury them.

I picked this up from BB over the holiday season for $20 (got a $10 gc by buying it though), and only last night opened it up to watch it.

I watched only 45 mins last night and was pretty blown away. Not so much at the doc styling, but the story and how much Super 8 they had of them in their Mudcrutch days. Its pretty amazing how easily it came to them.

I was always a pretty casual Petty fan, with a few of his records here and there, but I really am learning to love his stuff. Can't wait to finish this.

i tivoed it from sundance yesterday and watched the first hour last night. i totally agree with the above. it seemed too easy, like they just started playing and all of a sudden they were drawing big crowds and then off to get a record contract. but i guess if you're really good, those things might happen.

and i did not know that he first broke in the UK. i knew the first album didn't do great here, but tom petty always seemed to get lumped in with baseball and apple pie. so for his music to be a hit in the UK before in the US was a surprise.

Yeah, this was another point that I found to be interesting. The point being made about how the English (especially at this point in time) turning their noses up at anything American rock-oriented, but falling in love with Petty was interesting as well. Gotta say, its a damn good rockdoc. Enough talking heads to tell the story, with enough live/actual songs to tell the rest.

I'm not quite halfway through this monster yet, and it's fantastic.

These dudes make some damn good rock and roll.

Upon further review, I've found that I pretty much have no Heartbreakers stuff around here. Anyone (FT?) have the first 3-4 albums they care to throw a young brothas way?
