having a discussion with someone about this. theyre trying to tell me that in the 90s green day were a pussified version of nirvana and were that way by choice because of the money they knew theyd make by ripping them off. its my opinion that the only way green day was benefitted by nirvana was on the corporate side. without nirvana openeing the doors for music to reach the mainstream that wasnt michael jackson or hair metal green day wouldnt have gotten the opprtunities. but musically they took the ramones and added their own thing to create a new sound that started their own trend with spawns of their own and now 10 years later for better or worse are the godfathers of basically a genre they created.

Ditto. Green Day owes something to Cheap Trick and the Buzzcocks way before Nirvana.

Yeah....I'm with you on this one. Nirvana was instrumental in creating the playing field on which Green Day succeeded, but that's it.

Radiohead were huge fans of Nirvana too.

I agree, many bands ripped off Nirvana musically in the 1990's, but Green Day were not one of them.

No.

Nirvana did form two years before AIC (though they weren't called Nirvana until '86), but they didn't have the signature "Nirvana" sound until after they'd absorbed the Pixies early works and melded them with their Melvins fixations. Whereas, AIC were a Black Sabbath-Soundgarden blend.

Green Day stole more from bands like Lemonheads, Suicidal Tendencies, The Descendants, Social Distortion, Bad Religion, Violent Femmes and Dead Milkmen, with ripoffs directly from late 70's Ramonesque punk than to anything from Nirvana, except maybe some of the guitar parts are Nirvana-ish sometimes.

I'm way too lazy to check this stuff out and I'm sure you are too. So just assume I'm right.

1.Green Day were performing together in the late 80's long before anyone had heard of Nirvana
2.Their album Kerplunk sounds pretty much just like their breakthrough Dookie. So they had already established their sound by then.
3.They were recording Kerplunk BEFORE Nevermind hit.
4.This makes it kind of difficult to suggest that they owe anything to Nirvana musically.
5.Your friend doesn't know what he's talking about.

Steve

Its an inane argument- Green Day owe their sound to many American and British punk bands. Nirvana are influenced by 70's rock but had a punk sensibility.

Green Day as godfathers of a genre is a bit of a stretch for me. They are a below average punk band that knew how to be cute and now, like the Chili Peppers they will not go away, but have done mainstream music the big favor of Sum 41 and Good Charlotte and the like.

I don't buy that, Soundgarden were the big Black Sabbath fans not Alice, Would? even sounds like a Nirvana song.

Ahh buggers, i don't even like grunge, i'm not having this argument.

Everyone ripped off Danica McKellar now go home and eat pork!

This was the first concert I went to when I was in 8th grade. Gavin got hit in the mouth by a shoe and chipped his tooth. Ok back to the topic.

do bands really sit around stealing sounds from other bands?

I would think the way a band would come up with new material would be to just make songs that they think sound good. I wouldn't think a band would be like, "I just can't figure out this bridge, how would nirvana do it, oh, like that. Yeah, that works."

Note: This is exactly how architects work. We look at past examples to come up with new stuff. History is our greatest teacher or some shit like that.
