That's a colloquialism I've been using long before the Stus, but yess, it is great.

I don't envy players in the last decade, to be sure. Or at least those with any semblance of a conscience. I know a former pro road biker, who had a spot on the 96 olympic team. He said it was the norm there, too, but testing was a lot more rigorous than in MLB...(read: testing existed). But everybody did it. More importantly, your competitors were all going to do it. If you didn't do it, you were starting out in the hole. And did the coaches care? Did they support you and give you any slack when it came time to cut somebody? Nope. Win or get out. It's all about the numbers, and there's a well-paid chemist somewhere who can always stay one step ahead of the testing chemists, so as long as your flavor of juice is the most up-to-date, you piss clean.

I know most people here will believe otherwise, but Frank Thomas is totally clean. He has been the most outspoken player against steroids since about 1999 and has offered to test. He also led a boycott of the testing in 2003 so that the % of players who tested positive would be as high as possible so that testing would be MANDATORY in the following season. He hasn't gotten bigger in his 13 seasons...he's always been huge and he's always been one of the best contact hitters in the game. The homer totals for Thomas were never gargantuan, either.

I actually, probably agree with you Spade regarding Big Frank much more than I let on to the Sen.

I feel you pain regarding a strained relationship with a guy you are a fan of as he ages.

Sucks, don't it?
