Anybody ever been to Cuba? I would like to visit it before communism goes away.

Good friend of mine spent a month there 3 years ago in July- her tales did absolutely nothing to encourage me to consider it. Stayed in one of the "better" hotels in Havana- no A/C, water available only sporadically, frequent electricity failures, terrible food. It sounded (and looked, from pictures she took) like a dismal, dreary place, although she had high praise for the Cuban people.

I'm heading to Tulum (an hour south of PDC) in two weeks. I can't wait!

The Riviera Maya (the region south of Cancun along the Caribbean Sea) can be done relatively cheap, esp. compared to a place like St Bart's. Plus you get mayan ruins in addition to beaches. I'm psyched to go.

hey, can you report back on how it was? we are looking at going for a long weekend to mexico in april...and tulum sounds interesting. we are looking for non-toursity/spring break places to go.

No problem. We are staying at Cabanas Copal, right on the beach in the Tulum Hotel Zone. No electricity, no AC. Should be interesting.

We're in Tulum for 4 nights, then we're going to Valladolid for the last 2 nights. Valladolid is supposed to be a cool town, plus its close to Chetchen Itza (big ruins).

There's a great message board for the RM - http://www.locogringo.com (find the Akumal/ RM forum link on the bottom left of the page).

We never made it to Tulum, but we were in PDC a couple of years ago. PDC itself is a very cute town... I guess you could say it is a bit touristy, but nowhere nearly as bad Cancun or Puerto Vallarta. I've heard Zamas is a neat little place to stay at near Tulum. Very rustic and on the beach.

edit: here's a pic we took on the beach in front of our hotel in PDC... we had just gotten there, so it was around 6 pm

also, Tulum is supposed to be nice, but not nearly as intact as Chichen Itza or Coba.

Another good place for PDC info is here: http://playadelcarmeninfo.com/

actually, i'm pretty sure kids are no problem. Copal has cabanas for 4 people, and I'm pretty sure I've heard of people taking their kids there onthe locogringo board (there is a little bit of nudity on the beach, though, supposedly!). and there are ton of other places along the beach (a few are adults only, however).

Some friends of mine have this place in the Exhumas. I am sure the rates are decent in the summer. You get a boat , a cottage, and a golf cart to get around the island.

Ding! Both Chicen Itsa and Coba are awesome. I stayed here for my cousin's wedding. All-inclusive w/ day-trips to the ruins on certain days of the week. A bit touristy, I guess, but it didn't bother me. Suitable for families as well.

Will have a scouting report on Greece (Chalidiki) by Labor Day.
