Boo all of you and your "growing". It seems everything's a "grower" these days. I say f*ck all that. It's a term created by marketing to psychologically damper people's own perception of an album, a way to infuse genius with every peice of crap that is released, whether it's actual or not.

...having said that i think gimmie fiction is a total grower.

I'm giving it an initial 8...but sometimes when you hear the songs live they get better.

I expect I'll listen to this one 10,000 times this year.

on first listen, not as catchy as ktm or gct, but just as good. coincidentally, for the first time ever saying this, i think i need MORE LISTENS.

I woke up this morning (Okay, afternoon) and found a burn laying on my cpu, courtesy Yail Bloor via FT. I put it through the cpu and then onto the stereo.

It sounds like Spoon. It is more immediately accessible than KTM, but not nearly so much as GCT, which was one of those "so this is what everyone was talking about" albums.

I was checking sites and emailing people, when Sister Jack came on, and I said, this HAS to be the song Spade was talking about. Best song on the album per first listen. I am going to make an effort not to consign this to teh back of the proverbial burner, and see what it can do for me.

Ok. I lied. I couldn't wait.

My thoughts: I LOVE ME SOME SPOON!

Initial opinion on first listen: I LIKE IT. My gawd, this will probably be in Top 20.

Songs I dig:
I Turn My Camera On
The Delicate Place
Sister Jack
I Summon You

I think it will definitely be a grower... but on first listen, I definitely like it better than KTM (but I'm a fan of KTM so there) but it's not GTC.

Now, to wait for final product in May. *sigh*

I found the demos mediocre so I haven't really pursued this yet. All this chatter makes it sound like I'm not going to be too impressed though. KTM is one of my least favert Spoon records and it appears GF might suffer the same fate. I'll buy the fucker, but I really look forward to the day they revisit a sound akin to ASOS - the choicest release to date.

I like how there are no real guitar leads. Instead it is just processed as hell guitar noise.

What is missing is the killer guitar work that carried melodies and did interesting shit in the songs they did before.

This record is really rhythm based with maybe two, three at most, instruments laying down the foundation each song and then just holding the line.

I agree with the poster above that this may not be the finished product.

I listened to it twice the other day and wasn't feeling it at all, I was really disappointed. But I'm giving it another listen right now and I'm really digging it. I think I was focusing on it too much before. Now I'm just chilling and letting the music do its thing, and it's a lot more enjoyable. So to those who aren't feeling it, don't give up!

I've only listened to it once so far. It's pretty good though, def. more of a 'grower' than GCT or KTM. I think it's a bit mellower than both of those too, like The Dismemberment Plan's Change is to E&I and Is Terrified.
I like I Turn My Camera On, Sister Jack, The Two Sides Of Monsieur Valentin, I Summon You & The Beast And Dragon, Adored. Most of the songs are pretty good but IMO tracks 4, 5 & 11 are some of the most boring stuff the band has done.

I like it a bunch, there are some not so exciting tracks, however. The Beast And Dragon, I Turn My Camera On, Sister Jack, The Two Sides Of Monsieur Valentin, & I Summon You are the standouts for me.

I think it peters out just a tad toward the last part of the album, but I really do like it a lot. Of course, Spoon's back catalog is so strong, this could very easily end up in my year-end Top 10 AND still possibly rank as my fourth favorite Spoon full-length. However, it's still WAY too soon to tell where it will rank in the Spoon canon.

So I finally landed a copy of this thing (found it sitting in the used bin, fer cryin' out loud) and I'm completely blown away by it. I've been listening to it non-stop for the last 2 days. It's simultaneously immediate and a grower, and I can already say this ranks #1 on my list of Spoon albums.

A couple off-the-cuff thoughts:

It's cool to hear Eric Bachman on background vox on "I Turn My Camera On." And John Vanderslice seems to have played a large role on "Was It You?", getting credited with "extra production". That song, lyrically at least, seems to be the only throwaway on the album (but, dang, what a cool throwaway).

What strikes me the most - apart from the astoundingly subtle entwining of melody and groove - are Britt's lyrics. He slyly puts a lot of himself out there for people to decipher, and he's shown an almost mythic growth since A Series Of Sneaks.

I mean, look at how defeated and cynical Britt was on Girls Can Tell. On "Lines In The Suit" he asked "how come I feel so washed up/ at such a tender age?" It's like getting booted from the majors left him feeling like it was all over. He was pretty much ready for a desk job. But GCT sold better than any other Spoon album before that - and he came out swinging on the next one. KTM opened with "Small Stakes", a song that was nothing if not a statement of ambition. He wasn't satisfied with music as a hobby - Britt wanted nothing less than the brass ring.

And now, on "My Mathematical Mind" he sings:

"My mathematical mind can see the breaks
so I'm gonna stop riding the brakes
no no no no more riding the brakes
Instead I'm gonna see your stakes
Yeah I'm gonna see the stakes"

So the uppity young Britt that was ready to take on the world on ASOS is back, older and wiser, never again to be suckered in by the Merchants of Soul. It's the hero's journey of myth, I tells ya. Dude is ready to slay the dragon.

"The Beast And Dragon, Adored" he sings

"I got a feelin' - it didn't come free
I got a feelin' and then it got to me
When you don't feel it, it shows - they tear out your soul
And when you believe they call it rock and roll
And when you believe they call it rock and roll"

I've always pointed at Paul Westerberg as the last of the true believers. Ever since the 'Mats fizzled most rock 'n' roll has hid behind a threadbare curtain of irony or a studied lack of ambition. But now I gotta reappraise that, and, mang, it feels pretty fucking good to know we got Britt on our side.

Album of the year for me. Easily. And if anything else comes along that knocks this off its perch, then we got ourselves some kinda revolution.

Man, he sounds like John Lennon during this passage... good song.

Yeh, it's uncanny how much he conjures up Lennon on this album. And what about "They Never Got You" - that muffugga almost sounds like an outtake from Plastic Ono Band.

Saw them live last night at Coachella, and the new songs sounded great. I'm really looking forward to buying this next week.

Jesus, Uncle Monger, I'm not sure we listened to the same album. I fell upon this post yesterday and, after reading what I posted about not letting this slip to the back of the bus, realized I hadn't given it its proper due. So I cranked it up and sat outside and dranka beer and thumbed through a few magazines. I thought the album was over, and that my itunes was just continuing to play some of the demos FT had sent me (along with EVERY OTHER THING SPOON HAS RECORDED) Went in to push it back to the beginning, and realized I was still listening to the album. I was dissapointed. I guess the anvil missed me and hit you.

INITALLY: "this album is inherently great. but i don't think it's as great as i would have hoped."

NOW (one month later): "this album is indeed great to some degree, in a different way than any of their other previous albums. i'm a very understanding person like that."
