Sure Green Day was influenced by all the British and US Punk bands you all mention. However, there has always been something unique in Billie Joes vocal and guitar melodies that set them apart. GD also has spawned many watered down immitators, like Nirvana, U2, R.E.M, Chili Peppers. But American Idiot has put them into that level of superstardom, or at least damn close. I would say that both Green Day and Rancid emerged from the whole Lookout records Bay Area scene and transcended their influences to create some really great music.

This I don't understand. The Chili Peppers and U2 date back to the 70s, and R.E.M. started right in 80...

Green Day formed when they were in high school in the late 80's...

This has got to be a joke. I'm way too tired and i've got a funeral to go to, so if this turns into a shitstorm, have fun.

I think Jefe's trying to say GD has 'spawned watered down immitators' like that of U2, REM, Korn & a plethora of other bands.

Green Day are one of a kind in my opinion They pretty much stood alone, even compared to other pop punk bands on the early Lookout! roster. Green Day's signing to a major label and huge success may have helped some bands climb the industry ladder (although some may argue that more bands were hurt by the indie-snatch frenzy of the early-mid 90s...i.e. Jawbreaker), but really I don't see the influence on the music itself. I can't really think of any shitty band that they spawned, other than maybe Good Charlotte. Yes there were bands that were straight up clones like Klover and the Migraines, but they pretty much went nowhere.
Sum 41, Blink 182, etc. came from more of the skater melodicore scene than pop punk.

eh...i hope snl is good tonight
