My wife accepted a job at a movie trailer company and we are heading to cali March 1st. Very sad to be leaving New York... I thought I'd die here (hit by train or anthrax).

Hopefully I'll stay unemplyeed for while but if any LA peeps need Mac/PC support just let me know. I've got skills people.

We are driving across country (from NYC) and we're hitting these spots. Let me know if you have any recommendations!

3/1 Richmond VA
3/2 Atlanta GA
3/4 Memphis TN
3/6 New Orleans LA
3/8 Austin TX -too early for SXSW :(
3/10 Carlsbad NM
3/11 Santa Fe NM
3/13 Sedona AZ
3/15 Grand Canyon AZ
3/16 Vegas NV
3/17 LA CA

Nothing really going on in Atlanta on the 2nd. Where are you staying? I'm sure if you and your wife are up for it we could meet somewhere in town and have a beer. I'm sure Derris and the other Atliens would be down as well.

Thanks. We're staying with some friends in Carrolton and I'm not sure what the plan is specifically. Any drinking establishments you might recommend?

Well, Carrolton is a ways from Atlanta (out I-20 a fair piece) but if its the afternoon, I always like the Flat Iron in East Atlanta or maybe the Righteous Room on Ponce and N. Highland; keep us posted.

Yep... I think her official job title is a preditor (producer/editor). She can whip up all kinds of crazy shit with Avid (and Final Cut pro).

My skills are more computer oriented... I've been doing IT support and systems admin stuff for a few years now. I just gave up about a dozen clients to some guys starting their own consulting business. I don't know if I'll try and get a real job or build up a new client base in LA.

Who needs to eat... tell me your favorite bars!

An old friend works at the University and he's supposed to show us around.

Carrolton is home to West Georgia. The only thing I remember from when friends of mine attended there is: The Mellow Mushroom serves pitchers of mixed drinks. Like Crown and Coke pitchers....might be worth checking out, mang. Plus, the sherm stick has some pretty good pizz as well.

Interesting itinerary. There ain't a whole lot in Carlsbad, NM (other than the big hole in the ground with the floor made of bat shit) but the drive to Santa Fe should be cool. I did most of that ride from Las Cruces to Carlsbad, north on the NM side going and south through Texas on the way back.

You are aware that these are in NO WAY near each other/ follow any kind of logical geographic pattern? Not that I care, just making sure you know what you're doing.

Believe me, I know. It's a grueling driving schedule but it can work. We've got a good 6-7 hours driving between stops. New Orleans was booked up for that weekend so we decided to go to Memphis in between. Someone suggested driving Highway 61 from Memphis to NO for rock and rolls sake but that would be impossible given the time constraints.

Carslbad was the closest we could get from Austin and be out of Texas in a day. It was that or Lubbock... and I'll take bat shit over that any day.

Hey, that's all good, I was just making sure you knew it wasn't direct.

Memphis is tight, man. Graceland, Sun Studios, the Stax Museum is open now, and BAR-B-Que. Hit Corky's. Abiat makes a beer especially for them, and the dry rub ribs is tops.

And New Orleans, well, is New Orleans. Where else is it perfectly socially acceptable to be face melting drunk at 4pam and 4am and every hour in between. Go to damn ol' Felix's and order some turtle soup and a roast beef poboy with gravy.

I know you didn't just recommend Corky's for Memphis BBQ. Corky's is good, but you need to hit up Tops, Central, or Jim Neely's Interstate BBQ for the real, coronary-inducing thing.
Since you're coming in on a Friday, there shouldn't be a problem finding drinking establishments. Downtown there's Beale Street of course, but the Flying Saucer's always good if you want to get away from Blues Disneyland (and it's only block away if you're too tipsy.) Young Avenue Deli should be packed on Friday if you get a chance to go out to Midtown; plus you'll get real Memphis and no touristy crap.
Stax Museum is definitely worth a visit, but I'd skip Graceland if you've seen it before.

If you are wanting see any "sights" definitely go see the Edgar Allan Poe house in Richmond. It's a pretty nifty little tour.

And, on a related note, I will be leaving San Jose in June(hopefully permanently) to move back to Virginia indefinitely. I am trying to get an internship at a local news station. yeehaw.

Be careful once you get out to LA - a lot of us can be drunken assholes every once in a while...
