Since you're coming in on a Friday, there shouldn't be a problem finding drinking establishments. Downtown there's Beale Street of course, but the Flying Saucer's always good if you want to get away from Blues Disneyland (and it's only block away if you're too tipsy.) Young Avenue Deli should be packed on Friday if you get a chance to go out to Midtown; plus you'll get real Memphis and no touristy crap.
Stax Museum is definitely worth a visit, but I'd skip Graceland if you've seen it before.


Excellent... that's the kind of info that we are looking for. Places that we can get to when we are drunk! And I'm torn over going to Graceland... it would be worth it just to see the other fans that are waiting in line.

I'm just pissed that I have to drive everywhere. I haven't had to drive drunk in ten years... just hop in a cab. I guess I'll have to find a local spot to do my drinking.

If you've never been, Graceland is fucking awesome. I mean, it's Elvis's house, man..Seriously, you won't regret it. Also, I saw Joey Lauren Adams in line there as well, so you may be on to something about the crowd

I reccomended Corky's because I thought it was better than the place with the red-checked table cloths that everyone seems to fawn over...and their house-brew of Abita, which you really can't say isn't fucking cool.

Their burr is alright, I'll concede that. And the Jungle Room is a trip if you haven't been; just prepare yourself for surrealism (nothing beats a candlelight vigil, though.) Also, Earnestine & Hazel's is probably the bar that best represents Memphis, and I didn't even mention it. Basically a shitty dive, but plenty of vibe and history (Replacements played a couple times, White Stripes went from a show there to that MTV awards travesty.)[/i]


edit - Lucky bastard, seeing Joey Lauren Adams. I've been here 14 years, and all I ever see are sobbing Japanese people with pompadours. :(

Unfortunately, Santa Monica and Manhatten Beach are too far to comute into the city for work. We like those alot.

I live in one of the many 'burbs east of Los Angeles (San Gabriel Valley, Pasadena area), but work in West Hollywood. So, I have a 30 mile commute to/from work. I know exactly where you'll be living at -- The Grove was renovated a couple of years ago, aka "Farmer's Market". Silverlake and Los Feliz areas are all cool. So, is West Hollywood for that matter.

Don't forget to hit up my favourite club, The Troubadour, on Santa Monica Blvd. I'm sure I'll see you and your wife there at shows. :)

That's too bad...I live in Westchester (between LAX and Marina Del Rey), and like it a lot, and know some people who have bought some AWESOME, and relatively inexpensive homes in Palms and Culver City...

If you go for Silver Lake, you should try to go for something closer to Glendale/Los Feliz, rather than Echo Park. The area you'll be staying in (near the Grove) is pretty nice too, and fairly "central", as far as going places goes..

Miracle Mile/Fairfax area IMO is the best part of LA. It's about as central as you can get & there's so much so close
